Roach KillerRoach Killer / Tardi-Legrand ; with an introduction by Art Spiegelman ; translation by Randy & Jean-Marc Lofficier. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1992. -- 60 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Translation of: Tueur de Cafards. -- First appeared in English in Cheval Noir, issues 9-14 (1991). -- Brief postscripts by both Benjamin Legrand and Jacques Tardi talk about a world-wide secret government, assassinations by "insane" people, and the role of the media in interpreting such events. -- Call no.: PN6747.T3R6 1992Summary: Walter Eisenhower is an exterminator in New York City, in the Bronx. One day, in an elevator going to a job for a Dr. Nielsen on the 12th floor, he sees a button for the 13th floor. He's never seen a thirteenth floor in New York, so he presses the button out of curiosity. In the hallway of the thirteenth floor he hears people talking about assassinations of famous people. Retreating to the twelfth floor he performs his extermination under the suspicious eye of a big man who acts more like a thug than a doctor's assistant. A little shaken up about this, Walter stops in a bar near his office and talks with Luis, a fellow exterminator. Through the bar window they see the lab assistant from Dr. Nielsen's and another dangerous looking man going into the exterminating headquarters. Luis smells money, sneaks Walter out and hides him, and goes back to investigate the thirteenth floor. The next day the thugs are following Luis, and Luis' Puerto Rican gang jumps them. A shootout leaves three dead, but Luis has captured one of the thugs and lets him go with instructions. Luis wants to exchange Walter for a suitcase full of money. Before the exchange can happen, the thugs kidnap Luis' sister, and Luis agrees to exchange Walter for her. At the exchange, the thugs waste no time killing Luis and his sister, and the police get Walter. His story is so crazy that a judge sends him for psychiatric care, and he ends up on the twelfth floor with Dr. Nielsen. Nielsen programs Walter to assassinate a public figure, which he does. Walter then goes into a psychiatric hospital for good. This summary is from European Comics in English

Solange would prefer to enter a convent, however, so her father goes to the king to get his daughter an appropriate appointment. It happens that a rebellious abbess, named Julie, needs to be replaced and punished. Solange spends an internship at a small convent, and takes the religious name of Mother Christine. Christine arrives at St. Lactensin with an army detachment to help her take charge. Julie is taken to a house of punishment to be bound, beaten and humiliated. Christine is so impressed with the proceedings at the house of punishment, that she determines to institute a regimen of whipping and humiliation back at the convent. Two young interns, Pelagie and Euphemie, are unhappy with this, burn the convent to the ground, and escape. The rest of the sisters take refuge in a city, while Christine leaves with two other nuns to ask the Archbishop for money to build a new convent. As they travel a deserted road, brigands come upon them. The nuns are soon stripped and tied and forced to accept sexual abuse from the men. One of the men, named Gautier Tortille, seems to bond particularly with Mother Christine. As all this is happening, the king's soldiers come upon them and arrest them all, except Gautier who escapes. As the next day is a national holiday, the nuns are tortured in a public square. Afterwards they are taken before the Archbishop, who recognizes them and says a mistake has been made. However he has been getting complaints about Christine's excessive zeal, and so Christine is now taken to the house of punishment. After a time Christine is given to a farm family as a servant, where she fits in well and takes her turn punishing the other women of the family. Back in the house of punishment, after some severe touching up, she goes to confession, but is not penitent enough and is not granted absolution. Gautier Tortille visits the convent to rescue Christine, but she prefers to stay so he leaves with another woman. At the end, Christine's mother comes to view the punishment, and leaves convinced that her daughter is mad. This summary is from European Comics in English

It includes popular story lines that include Jeremy and Hector fixing up their old van and take it for a clandestine joy ride, and Jeremy learning the value of tact on his girlfriend's bad hair days, selling random household items on eBay, surviving sudden radical growth spurts, and being coaxed into a fishing trip with his father, who seizes the opportunity to have "the talk." Zits captures the nature of teenage boys with uncanny precision. In one series of strips, Jeremy's mom is alarmed when she finds a fist-size hole in the wall of his room. Pressed to explain it, he balks. When he finally describes what happened, it turns out that the hole wasn't made in a moment of teen hormonal rage. It was made in a moment of teen hormonal idiocy, when he used his mom's meat tenderizing mallet to swat a bug. Anyone who has spent much time around an adolescent boy will recognize this seemingly inexplicable behavior: intelligence and impulsiveness locked in constant battle. This is the natural state of the teen male, and it's portrayed exquisitely in Zits." -- Call no.: PN6728.Z55R3 2004 ----------------------------------------------------- Road Trip.
