Rabagliati, Michel.
Paul Joins the Scouts / Michel Rabagliati. -- Greenwich,
   NS, Canada : Conundrum Press, 2013. -- 1 v. : ill. ; 26 cm.
   -- (Bdang ; 12) -- Translation of: Paul au Parc. --
Translated by Helga Dascher. -- Summary (from publisher via
SkyRiver): "Montrealer Michel Rabagliati returns to the
childhood story of his famous semi-autobiographical
character. It's 1970 and Paul's family watches the news
with anxiety as bombs are going off around Montreal. But
Paul is more interested in flying his kite, comics, and his
first kiss. Soon Paul joins the Scouts and heads off to
camp. Away from his parents and extended family he
discovers self worth in a troop of like-minded and
enthusiastic boys. Things take a turn, however, when the
troop gets mixed up in the terrifying events of the FLQ
crisis. Paul Joins the Scouts is a coming of age story
which takes an historical approach to both the Baden Powell
scouting movement and the October Crisis, but humanizes
these incidents for both a YA and adult audience. It is
original, sincere, captivating, and a little bit retro." --

Rabanal, Daniel, 1949-
"Panorama de la Historieta en Colombia" / Daniel Rabanal.
   p. 15-30 in La Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 1, no. 1 (Abril 2001).
-- Abstract: Colombia never
characteristically had a large or high-quality comics
production, though certainly during the 1950s and 1960s
there was widespread consumption of imported comics mainly
from Mexico and the U.S. From that time a feeling of
nostalgia lingered for the medium, though it had never had
its own identity in the country. In the 1980s there were
quite a few attempts to create "Colombian" comics, but they
remained, unfortunately, only attempts. In the 1990s, young
artists influenced by Japanese manga and without links to
the North-American tradition launched themselvs into a new
series of attempts, irregular but worthy, from which not
very much has survived. This paper deals synthetically with
the story of the vicissitudes of comics production in
Colombia. -- Abstracts as printed with the article, with
some editing of the English. -- Includes illustrations and
brief biographies of eight Colombian comics artists. --

"The Farx Job" (Schlomo Raven) / Byron Preiss, Tom Sutton.

Schlomo Raven is a very short detective. His secretary
Eppie says he has "the heart of a lion and the mind of a
rabbi." Heepo, Choocho, Zeepo and Grippo Farx have been
kidnapped. Talc and large footprints on the scene lead
Schlomo to suspect Bella Bugosi and Morton Barloff are
involved, so he flies to Los Angeles. Bugosi and Barloff
had indeed been there to steal a coffin, but had not
kidnapped the brothers. Another clue leads him to Bumphrey
Hogart's place, where he finds the Farx Brothers have been
hired by Hogart to teach him how to be funny. Story ends
with: "Tomorrow morning I'd buy the Times, take a walk in

in two volumes: 'Le Chat du Rabbin. 4, Le paradis
terrestre' in 2005 and 'Le Chat du Rabbin. 5, Jérusalem
d'Afrique' in 2006. -- Summary (from dust jacket): "Joann
Sfar's beloved, humorous, and wise talking cat is back for
more beautifully illustrated adventures in Algiers and
across Africa in the 1930s. While the rabbi is away, his
cat tags along with Malka of the Lions (the rabbi's
enigmatic cousin), who roams the desert with his
ferocious-on-demand lion. Some believe Malka to be a pious
Jew, others think he's a shrewd womanizer, but the cat will
be the one to discover the surprising truth." "Back in
Algiers, the rabbi's daughter, Zlabya, and her new husband
fill the house with their fighting, while the city around
them fills with a rising tide of anti-Semitism. On a whim,
the rabbi's cat, the rabbi, a sheik (also a cousin of the
rabbi), and a very misplaced Russian painter set out on a
fantastic journey (even encountering a young reporter named
Tintin in the Congo) in search of an African Jerusalem. It
turns out to be very fortuitous that the rabbi's cat is not
just a talking cat, but a multilingual talking cat." --

Iggy, Tubby and a friend try to shoot a rabbit with their
bows and arrows. Then Iggy buys jelly beans and makes a
path from the rabbit's hole to their clubhouse, but Lulu
follows the path and eats the jelly beans. The boys pretend
that the jelly beans were dangerous, make her lie down, and
pour a bucket of water over her to "save her life." Lulu
overhears them laughing about it, borrows a toy rabbit from
Alvin, and puts it in a rowboat out in the water. When the
boys shove off on a log to get the rabbit, she pulls the
rabbit back to her with a string. -- Call no.:
