The Order of the Black Dragon

The Order of the Black Dragon / Griffo & Marcus. -- Brussels, Belgium : Editions MIchel Deligne, 1985. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- (A Bob Wilson Adventure) -- Detective genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.G7O7 1985

Summary: In the 1920s, Bob Wilson is at a party in Europe telling the story of how, in his native New York City, he met with Dashiel Hammett and went to Chinatown to talk to a stool pigeon. It was a setup, and both Wilson and Hammett were left in a death trap to be sprung by a horde of rats in the room. This was the work of a Chinese gang boss calling himself the Black Dragon. After the rats came up out of their trap door, a young blonde woman named Amanda came up as well, untied them, gave them a boat and told them they should go to a Greek freighter on the Hudson River near the Brooklyn Bridge. Amanda is the daughter of the Black Dragon. The next morning The Black Dragon arrived in a tiny junk with Amanda tied to the mast. The junk fired on the freighter, but the freighter was a well-armed drug runner, Amanda was rescued and the junk was sunk. Back in the present, a glamorous Amanda arrives at the party, and everyone is excited to meet her. The next morning Amanda has been kidnapped to Antwerp and a gangland-style drive-by almost kills Bob Wilson, though he is saved by an unknown man who also dies. Wilson travels to Belgium to find that Amanda has been taken on a ship to Shanghai, so he follows in another freighter. On Wilson's freighter an attempted mutiny is soon in progress, but two more mysterious men save the situation. His saviours are named Bingo and Mingo, and their other brother Ringo was the one that gave his life earlier to protect Wilson. In Shanghai, an old Oxford pal takes Wilson to an opium den, which turns out to be another ambush, and Bingo and Mingo save him, taking him to their boss, General Chiang Kai-Shek. The General wants Wilson to go to Manchuria and take care of the Black Dragon, who didn't drown when his junk sank. The train is ambushed by bandits, but an armored train comes along just in time to drive them off. Wilson asks the warlord in charge for help, but the warlord is loyal to the Black Dragon. Soon Wilson is in a cell waiting for execution, but is rescued by Germans working for Chiang. Wilson runs back into the palace, finds Dingo and Mingo dead, and kills the Black Dragon. Amanda sees him do it, and says she doesn't love him anymore, and anyway she never had stopped working for her father.

outnumbered six to one. Suddenly the gunfight is
interrupted by the appearance of a peddler's wagon. The
driver is singing at the top of his lungs, which for some
reason causes the marauders to flee. The singer introduces
himself as Ben Weber, a music teacher wishing to set up
shop in Purple Valley. Introductions complete, the two
check on the Rumsons, whos home is in flames. Wayne
arranges for Weber to take the Rumsons into town. Miss
Rumson seems to recognize Ben Weber, but he denies ever
being in Purple Valley before. A few days later, John Wayne
meets Miss Rumson on the way to a music lesson, and it's
obvious that there's a romance budding. While in the barber
shop, Wayne hears gunfire and singing as the bank is being
robbed, and begins to think Ben may be the ringleader of
the robbers. With the help of the sheriff, and the
reluctant Miss Rumson, Wayne lays a trap for the gang
during the stage shipment of some ore. While Miss Rumson is
at her music lesson, the trap is sprung. Wayne catches the
leader and brings him to town, where everyone realizes
there seems to be two Ben Webers. One of them, the gang
leader, is Ben's twin brother, Rafe. -- Call no.:
