Summary: Over the objections of Lama Mipam, whose reincarnation he is, Gabriel obeys his mother and destroys the whole village that has caused her so much pain. Her demands continue until she is telling him to destroy the whole world, and Gabriel leaves in anguish over the violence he has already done. In the mountains, he tries to get vultures to eat him, then finds an old spiritual master dead. Gabriel decides he'd rather live to attain Buddhahood, and moves into the master's cave. After three years of surviving in the snow on nettles Gabriel begins to hallucinate, and a monk finds him while searching for a victim for the Great Bön. Gabriel doesn't resist when he's placed in the iron goddess. Soon, however, the machine self-destructs and Gabriel is unharmed. Gabriel defeats the Bön and his assistant without leaving his trance, and heads back to the mountains. He is about to die when a Yeti finds him and nurses him to life. The Yeti is old and knew Gabriel in six of Gabriel's previous incarnations, and with the Yeti's help Gabriel remembers them all.
