society was ridden with the evils of a rigid caste system,

"The king of Vijayanangara, Vira Narasimha, was very ill.
He was afraid that after his death, his much loved and
popular brother, Krishnadeva Raya, would seize the throne
from his little son. So he asked a trusted minister to put
Krishnadeva to death. The conscience-stricken minister
could not perform such a heinous deed and convinced the
bewildered prince to escape. Fate had already decreed that
Krishnadeva Raya would one day rule the Vijayanagara empire
and take it to its zenith of glory." -- Call no.: PN6790

script, Kamala Chandrakant ; illustrations, G.R. Naik ;
editor, Anant Pai. p. 1-32 in Amar Chitra Katha, no. 596
(1976, 2010 printing). -- (Bravehearts) -- Begins: "Raja
Bhoja was the son of King Sindhula of Dhara, in Madhya
Pradesh. He was born when Sindhula was very old." --
Summary from back cover: "Amidst the many wars he fought,
Raja Bhoja (11th century A.D.), the ruler of Malwa, always
found time to listen to the poetry of the gifted. Ballala,
a poet in his court, has immortalised his patron in his
work Bhoja Prabandha which is a romantic tale, written in
Sanskrit, partly in verse and partly in prose. Ballala was
interested not so much in history as in heroics. In his
attempt to magnify Bhoja as a patron of the arts and
letters, Ballala has ignored historical facts. The poets,
Kalidasa and Bana, who he said adorned Bhoja's court,
actually lived much before Bhoja's times." -- Call no.:

(Bravehearts) -- Summary from back cover: "Tipu Sultan died
as he had lived, a free man. A childhood spent watching and
helping in his father's campaigns had made him a shrewd
general. From his father he also inherited courage and a
sense of honour and, most importantly, the determination to
oust the British from Indian soil. But this noble
18th-century warrior had no weapon against treachery." --

Amar Chitra Katha, no. 657 (1974, 1999 printing). --
(Indian Classics) -- Summary from back cover: "Noble though
penniless, the handsome Charudatta is the love of
Vasantasena's life, but scoundrels and misguided friends
threaten their happiness. Their tale, told by Shudraka in
his Sanskrit play written 2,000 years ago, presents a
picture of bustling town life at the time. Excitement and
adventure lurk around every corner, and sudden twists and
turns make this a classic nail-biting romantic thriller."

Summary: "Presents a cultural landscape whose narrative
differs in many ways from those presented by other
historians of the comic strip. Rather than beginning his
inquiry with the popularly accepted "sequential art"
definition of the comic strip, Smolderen instead wishes to
engage with the historical dimensions that inform that
definition. His goal is to understand the processes that
led to the twentieth-century comic strip, the highly
recognizable species of picture stories that he sees
crystallizing around 1900 in the United States. Featuring
close readings of the picture stories, caricatures, and
humoristic illustrations of William Hogarth, Rodolphe
Töpffer, Gustave Doré, and their many contemporaries,
Smolderen establishes how these artists were immersed in a
very old visual culture in which images--satirical images
in particular--were deciphered in a way that was often
described as hieroglyphical. Across eight chapters, he
acutely points out how the effect of the printing press and
the mass advent of audiovisual technologies (photography,
audio recording, and cinema) at the end of the nineteenth
century led to a new twentieth-century visual culture. In
tracing this evolution, Smolderen distinguishes himself
from other comics historians by following a methodology
that explains the present state of the form of comics on
the basis of its history, rather than presenting the
history of the form on the basis of its present state. This
study remaps the history of this influential art form." --
