Mr. ToadMr. Toad / Kenneth Grahame ; adapted by Michel Plessix ; translation by Joe Johnson. -- New York: Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1999. -- 32 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Wind in the Willows ; v. 2) -- Second of four volumes. -- Funny animal and fantasy genres. -- Call no.: PN6747.P547W5 1998v.2Chapter 4: "Mr. Badger" p. 1-11 -- Summary: Though grumbling a little at being waked, Badger soon brings Mole and Rat out of the snow into his comfortable home and serves them dinner and drinks. They speak together of their concern for Mr. Toad and his dangerous enthusiasm for automobiles, but decide they can't do anything until spring. In the morning Otter comes to visit, and while Otter and Water Rat are gossiping, Badger offers to show Mole around his underground lair. It is a large place, and finally Badger shows him an extensive set of ruined buildings, now underground but built by humans in an earlier time. The passages underground are so extensive, that Badger is able to lead the friends to the edge of the wood underground when it is time to leave, thus bypassing the dangers above. Chapter 5: "Home Sweet Home" p. 12-21 -- Summary: After sledding for a day, Mole and Rat take a wrong turn on the way home, and come upon a village of humans. After observing them for a bit, the two turn back, and happen to pass Mole's own home. Mole suddenly gets homesick, since he has not even seen his home since early spring. Mole is ashamed of how small and dusty his home looks, but Rat won't hear of it. In a few hours everything is cleaned up, just as a group of Christmas caroling mice knocks at the door. Rat and Mole spend a nice evening with the mice. Chapter 6: "Mr. Toad" p. 22-32 -- Summary: Spring comes, and Badger, Rat and Mole arrive at Toad's house just as the automobile is delivered. Badger delivers a lecture on the evils and dangers of motor cars, both to the driver himself and to the community. Toad pays no attention. They lock Mr. Toad in his own bedroom, and he does nothing but pretend to be driving a car. Finally, after a period of weeks, Toad's sound effects and general energy begin to wane to the extent that Rat decides to get a doctor. This gives Toad an opportunity to escape. The first thing he does is to steal a car. He is apprehended, and sentenced to twenty years in prison. This summary is from European Comics in English
