Mark-of-the-Dog

Mark-of-the-Dog / Silvio Cadelo ; translated by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York: Catalan Communications, 1991. -- 61 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- Translation of: Envie de Chien. -- Call no.: PN6747.C23E513 1991

Chapter 1. "Paternity: How Mark-of-the-Dog's father tried to wrest his son from the dreadful destiny of their race" p. 4-12 -- Summary: Mark-of-the-Dog's father steals a new heart for his son, so he won't be cursed with the murderous lack of free will normally inherited by his kind.

Chapter 2. "Nativity: How Mark-of-the-Dog was engendered, and how he killed his father" p. 13-25 -- Summary: Mark-of-the-Dog was conceived on a train, of hermaphrodite parents who each give birth. He has never known the twin born to his mother. After 75 years his father returns and forces him to patricide. Instead of eating the lizard sandwich his father offers as he is dying, Mark-of-the-Dog adopts the lizard as a friend. The lizard's name is Yug.

Chapter 3. "Fraternity: Mark-of-the-Dog is not rid of the curse of his species" p. 26-40 -- Summary: A Passer, who controls traffic between worlds, calls Mark-of-the-Dog for a meeting at a club, where an overweight RanXerox is one of the patrons. The Passer warns Mark-of-the-Dog that an executioner is coming to arrest him for his father's murder. RanXerox almost kills Yug. The executioner catches up with Mark-of-the-Dog in an art museum. Mark-of-the-Dog escapes to investigate another murder, which seems to have been done by his father. Yug communicates with a lizard witness, and takes them to the real murderer, the lost sister of Mark-of-the-Dog. She is jealous that he got the new heart.

Chapter 4. "Rebirth: The long-awaited comes to pass, and what was parted is rejoined" p. 41-62 -- Summary: Mark-of-the-Dog dreams of love and boxing, while his sister steals hearts, which will be given false registration numbers and sold. Mark-of-the-Dog finds a message from his father, and a box with his original heart in it, still beating. Yug returns the new heart to his body. The news reports that 37 hearts have been stolen, but the sister isn't going to quit until she has the one she came for. The siblings meet on a Paris bridge, and she attacks. He doesn't resist, and with the help of Yug, they merge beneath the surface of the Seine into one being.
