   -- 120 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. -- Summary (from amazon.com):
Zacchaeus starts with Z, the last letter of the alphabet.
Displaced by nature and vocation: Zacchaeus was born
albino, with whiter than white hair and skin, in a family
of dark people. He was born an artist, although his family
can't imagine what that is. He's poor, but he goes to a
rich man's school - his father's boss is really a generous
guy. We met and became Zacchaeus in his trivial and also
remarkable moments: the discovery that his father has
another family, the friction with his marginal brother, the
pathetic attempts to unravel the opposite sex. Even in a
city of 12 million people, Zacchaeus looks for his place,
perhaps in vain, but he does. He knows that São Paulo will

I Was Their American Dream : a Graphic Memoir / Malaka Gharib
; coloring by Toby Leigh. -- New York : Clarkson Potter

(from amazon.com via OCLC): "I Was Their American Dream is
at once a coming-of-age story and a reminder of the
thousands of immigrants who come to America in search for a
better life for themselves and their children. The daughter
of parents with unfulfilled dreams themselves, Malaka
navigated her childhood chasing her parents' ideals,
learning to code-switch between her family's Filipino and
Egyptian customs, adapting to white culture to fit in,
crushing on skater boys, and trying to understand the
tension between holding onto cultural values and trying to
be an all-American kid. Malaka Gharib's triumphant graphic
memoir brings to life her teenage antics and illuminates
earnest questions about identity and culture, while
providing thoughtful insight into the lives of modern
immigrants and the generation of millennial children they
raised. Malaka's story is a heartfelt tribute to the
American immigrants who have invested their future in the
promise of the American dream." -- Autobiographical genre.

The Tyranny of Silence : How One Cartoon Ignited a Global
Debate on the Future of Free Speech / Flemming Rose. --
   Washington, D.C. : CATO Institute Press, 2014. -- 237 p. ;
24 cm. -- Includes bibliographical references and index. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): When the Danish
newspaper Jyllands-Posten (Viby, Denmark) published the
cartoons of the prophet Mohammed nine years ago, Denmark
found itself at the center of a global battle about the
freedom of speech. The paper's culture editor, Flemming
Rose, defended the decision to print the 12 drawings, and
he quickly came to play a central part in the debate about
the limitations to freedom of speech in the 21st century.
Since then, Rose has visited universities and think tanks
and participated in conferences and debates around the
globe in order to discuss tolerance and freedom. In The
Tyranny of Silence, Flemming Rose writes about the people
and experiences that have influenced the way he views the
world and his understanding of the crisis, including
meetings with dissidents from the former Soviet Union and
ex-Muslims living in Europe. He provides a personal account
of an event that has shaped the debate about what it means
to be a citizen in a democracy and how to coexist in a
world that is increasingly multicultural, multi-religious,

8, no. 30 (June 2008).
-- Abstract: "When attending
to national stories within the popular memory of the Cuban
people, Juan Padrón Blanco's animated figure Elpidio
Valdés, a Mambi officer from the Ejército Libertador of
1895, comes to mind. This article first examines how
Elpidio, emblematic of Cubanidad, reflects all of what it
means to be Cuban; how his love interest Maria Silvia
represents the role that women have taken on in Cuba
throughout the revolutionary process; and how the stories

"Copi : el Fuera de Campo" / Laura Vanesa Vazquez. p. 75-86 in
La Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Sobre la Historieta,
   v. 8, no. 30 (June 2008).
-- Abstract: "The central importance of the
comics work of Raúl Damonde Taborda (Copi) resides in the
special qualities of his production in the comics field.
Obviously, this work cannot replace a proper study that
would require a deep and systematic investigation,
nevertheless, I believe that it can establish some
productive axes for future analyses. This paper tries, on
one hand, to analyze the comics production of an author
which was published in different graphical media, taking a
broad view over a period that starts with his political
exile and ends in a breakthrough of his artistic
trajectory. Finally, it is possible to point out that the
graphical work of the author is fundamental not only to
deepen the studies about comics and strips but also to
approach broader subjects. In other words: his production
is peculiar not only because it allows the analysis of a
particular type of allegory, but because at the same time
it transcends itself." -- Abstracts as printed with the

"Historietas Latinoamericanos en Otros Mercados, Razones para
el Exilio : El Caso de Argentina" / Manuel Barrero. p.
100-120 in La Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Sobre la
   Historieta, v. 8, no. 30 (June 2008).
-- Abstract: "Periods of
political and economic crisis in Latin American countries
have affected the comics publication industry. We review
the case of Argentina, whose authors occasionally had to
publish their works in a climate of lack of freedoms,
totally repressive with the introduction of the so-called
Proceso. We conclude that migration into other markets of
comics was motivated by economic reasons rather than
political reasons; that the criticism of the military
governments was timid, and were made through metaphor or
satire; and that the authors exiled for apparently
idological reasons perferred not to directly address the
atrocities committed during the military dictatorship,
producing only some mild complaints in their work." --
