Amazing Spider-Man & Silk : the Spider(fly) Effect. -- New
   York : Marvel Worldwide, Inc., 2016. -- col. ill. ; 26 cm.
-- Complete in 4 nos. -- Summary (from cover of TP via
OCLC)): "Back to the beginning: Spider-Man and Silk face a
date with destiny! For years they were strangers despite
their common origin. Then they were lovers. Now they're not
quite friends. But when they're sent back to just before
they got their spider-powers, Spider-Man and Silk have no
option but to put all that behind them. Can they let
bygones be bygones, stop a sinister threat to reality as
they knew it, and avoid accidentally wiping out the moment
that gave them their amazing abilities? Maybe these two
anachronistic arachnids could enlist some aid from a local
Forest Hills man. You might know him, his name's Ben
Parker. Spider-Man and Silk go back to where it all began:
the spectacular science fair that started it all!" --

2010, a struggling fruit vendor lit himself on fire outside

Tunisia. This final act of defiance sparked a popular
uprising that ousted the president and inspired a sea

   Michael F. Scholz. p. 31-47 in Comics an der Grenze : 9.
   Wissenschaftstagung der Gesellschaft für Comicforschung
(Berlin : Ch. A. Bachmann Verlag, 2017). -- "Abstract: The
article deals with the beginnings and the background of the
interaction between European comic culture and American
comic history. The successful establishment of American
comics in Europe in the mid-1930s is closely connected with
international economic relations, but it is understandable
only through the work of dedicated and well-connected
individuals. It is to the credit of John A. Brogan, Foreign
Sales Manager of King Feature Syndicate's international
sales department, established in 1929, who successfully
offered appropriate comic strips to European newspapers for
sale. His efforts initiated the setting up of agencies in
Europe, mainly devoted to the sales of comics. Thus the
organizational and personnel prerequisites for the
transatlantic cultural transfer in the field of comics were
   created." -- Call no.: PN6714.C575 2017

essay on the nature of the boundary of the comics form is
an analysis of US Congressman John Lewis's autobiography
March, which recounts his early days as a civil rights
leader and is in the form of a comic or 'graphic novel.' --
A few key examples are examined in which normally distinct
images and textual elements blend together thereby bringing
into question the nature of the boundary in a more general
sense as it functions in the comics. Some of the formal
elements of the graphic novel analyzed by the essay include
its symbolic composition, arrangement of panels and images,
treatment of light and dark areas, deployment of racialized
icons, and blurring of temporalities and history." -- Call

   Comicforschung (Berlin : Ch. A. Bachmann Verlag, 2017). --
"Abstract: In Britain in the late 1880s, two pop cultural
icons had an extraordinary meeting: one, Ally Sloper, the
fictional star of comic books and stage productions and the
other Jack the Ripper, the real-life serial killer who was
instantly ficitonalised on page and stage as the bogeyman
of the moment. The aim here is to explore the way in which
this dynamic developed, with a focus on a single issue of
   Ally Sloper's Half-Holiday (October 20, 1888), which
appeared a the point in time when it was first realised
that the killings were being done by a lone individual, and
when panic was at its peak. What was at stake politically
in the comic's reaction? What can it tell us about
Victorian attitudes to fear, death, and poverty? About the
status of women? Finally, about law and order, and the
social contract that existed between citizen and police?"

following article seeks to identify the various functions
of political borders in comic book narrations concerning
the Israel-Palestine Conflict with the assistance of
concepts of literary studies. Comic books like Joe Sacco's
Palestine or Guy Delisles Jerusalem serve as illustrating
examples. Functions of the border in comic-narrations as
separator, actant, and communicator are examined with the

"Absract: Ever more frequently, various kinds of
infographics can be found within the vocabulary of comics.
With recourse to picture and media theory, the article asks
for a minimum criterion to differentiate a pictogram from a

der Gesellschaft für Comicforschung (Berlin : Ch. A.
Bachmann Verlag, 2017). -- "Abstract: Although comics
integrate visual and pictorial elements, there can be found
a primace of text over picture, and vice versa, in specific
panels or scenes. This means a factual text-picture divide
in comics panels. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
questions hierarchies such as these through reciprocal
references between text and pictures. Inevitably, this
raises doubts about the information value of the individual
panels: Is there more going on here than is evident at
first glance? Thus League encourages an attentive,
investigative attitude towards itself. Through the
references inside the book, the comic also raises awareness
for the references pointing out of itself, to a canon of
literary sources informing Leagues ficitonal setup." --

   p. 149-164 in Comics an der Grenze : 9. Wissenschaftstagung

Bachmann Verlag, 2017). -- "Abstract: Monsters are no
rarity in the history of U.S.-American comics, but in Ken
Dahl's eponymous small press comic they assume a particular
function. His morphing monsters tell a story about how
being a carrier of the herpes virus leads to incessant
worry and social isolation. Dahl's narrative exposes the
instability of the body's boundaries, and that of the
distinction between illness and health. This chapter reads
Monsters through traditions and theorizations of the
Monstrous and Grotesque, as well as cultural histories of
medicine that have shed light on discourses of contagion
and (in-)visibility of illness. It is the idiosyncracies of
the comics medium and its history, and those of Dahl's
stylistic choices, that enable a particularly tangible
representation of social and personal illness experience."

   p. 165-178 in Comics an der Grenze : 9. Wissenschaftstagung

linear. There are no guidelines as to how they should be
read or whether the illustrations or the text are more
important. This creates disruption between and within the
panels which then again creates space for wider
interpretations. The aesthetics of disconuity and
repetition, characteristic of comic books and graphic
novels alike, are being put to use explicitly in the comic
book Die Hure h to highlight and raise questions concerning
identity, gender roles and desire. Identity, as discussed
in the story of Die Hure h, is not depicted as a static and
established entity, but is sketched as a construct of many
different fragments. The discontinuity in which identity is
presented in the comic book makes room for transgression
   in-between normative gender roles. Deliberatly
distinguishing between the visible and the imagined social
connotations, the comic exposes normative ideas and
constructions of gender and sex, thus making them more
accessible and easier to deconstruct." -- Call no.:

transmitted disease. Contrasting the topos of positive
mutation in superhero comics by Marvel or DC, Burns shows
mutations as mere deformity that cannot be employed in any

an art form in which an experimental search for identity
can take place in specific and definite interactions. They
can be designed and varied in fictional narratve concepts
as well as in the 'logic of images'. At the same time the
adolescents' work is interwoven with medial and fictitious
models. Self-conceptions are negotiated in the drawings and
in the roles of the comic stories' characters. The youth
culture of the adolescent comic artists enables a secondary
socialization for young people. Especially at the level of
fan art, the negotiation of sexuality and gender plays a
decisive role within the peer group. The shojo manga, the
general manga culture and manga and anime fandom allow
negotiation of homosexual identities in a positive way. In

novel Sexile as an intervention into linear narratives of
crossing such as he 'victim-rescuing narrative' (Shaksari)
or the 'transsexual narrative' (Bhanji). Sexile celebrats
the resourcefulness and creativity with which the denizens
of the borderlands craft homes in the no-man's land between
departures and impossible arrivals. I argue that it is both
the story that Sexile (re)tells as well as the format of

are embedded in narrated reality as if the characters were
experiencing them directly. Together with the character,
the reader transcends the border between narrated reality
and narrated dream. There are conventional stylistic
devices to mark this boundary. But the border between
narrated dream and narrated reality can also be
transcended, figures or elements can break out of dreams or
break into dreams of others. The dream can be
transgressive. Dreams can be defined by a space in which
the limitations of physics and logic do not apply. The
artistic engagement with experienced and fictitious dreams
enriches the comic and expands its possibilities. Dream
events and elements can even be used outside dream
sequences. Comics can treat narrated reality like a

Reprobus" / Julia Ingold. p. 251-266 in Comics an der
Grenze : 9. Wissenschaftstagung der Gesellschaft für
   Comicforschung (Berlin : Ch. A. Bachmann Verlag, 2017). --
"Abstract: Markus Färbr's Reprobus, published in 2012, is a
palimpsest, as defined by Genette, of the medieval legend
of St. Christopher. It is set in a dystopic world, where a
geographically existent 'world of legends and myths' is
slowly disappearing due to soil erosion. A border river
separates this land from a gloomy megacity on the west
bank. Christ and Christopher/Reprobus returns there to try
to remind the inhabitants of the city of their existence.
The mission and martyrdom of the old versions are omitted.
Instead Reprobus tries repeatedly to cross the border river
back from the world of men to the world of legends, in
vain. This border between logos and myth, which grows more
and more insuperable, deserves attention as an allegorical
constellation. For in this book the traditional moralisatio
is replaced by a question: If the myths have gone away,
will the stories ever stay in our time? Färber's creation
speaks of the hope, which Benjamin discusses in his theory
of allegory, of taking disappearing things, whether
material or spiritual, and filling them with new meaning in
order to potentially retrieve them from beyond the border
of oblivion and bring them into the respective present of
the artist, who thus becomes an allegorist." -- Call no.:

Alten," the artist Sigrid Sigurdson (Historiche Museum
   Frankfurt/Main) archives individual memories, multiple
traces found in texts, sounds and pictures. Rummaging in
the exhibition boxes, the visitor can retrace and
comprehend how intertwined the dynamics of memories are.
   Memories are deceptive, selective, perspectival,
fragmentary, unstable. The art of conserving memories and
especially Boltanskis archive show who fact and fiction
mingle and still become part of the collective memory bank.
However constructed and unsecure they are, memories
determine our lives constantly. Remembering is a
border-crossing process. Pictorial narratives deal with the
dynamics of it in various ways. Miguelanxo Prados graphic
novel Ardalén makes the topic of memory a border-crossing
part of the story, dealing with questions of now vs. then,
reality vs. delusion and competing personalities. Art thus
visualizes and depicts the inherent procedures (apnd
playfully catches its readers) by using border-crossing,
intermedial aesthetics, and involving texts and pictures
from a variety of styles. The aforementioned work by Prado
and Matthias Gnehms Der Maler der Ewigen Erinnerung will
