Hord

Hord / by J.D. Morvan and Jab Jab Whamo ; translated by Fershid Bharucha ; edited by Debra Rabas ; lettered by Adam Kubert ; cover design and interior production by John Figurski. -- New York : Heavy Metal, 1994. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- About a computer game. -- Call no.: PN6747.M66H613 1994

Summary: In 2073 A.D., in the shared virtual reality of Hord, a "psychic interactive game," a child is born. The child is not controlled by a player, and by 2074 the child seems to have the power to kill players, and does so. Psy Game Corp captures Keenan, the player who fathered the boy, and but can't find the child living in the Hord universe and so withdraws the game. Seventeen years later the someone kills three corporation programmers. The child is found still alive in some remaining game consoles, and using the personas of the players who found the consoles to defend himself against the corporation enforcers. The corporation would like to get the boy out of the game and market it again, since it was a big money-maker. In a plan to destroy the him, Psy Game Corp relaunches the game for physically handicapped players, thinking the boy won't be able to be so destructive using partially disabled characters. The child's father, Keenan, is also forcibly inserted into the game. Keenan realizes his son is a psychopathic murderer, and Psy Game Corp figures that Keenan is now their ally. The son kills all the cripples, but won't harm his father. He gives orders that he doesn't ever want to see his father again. One of the new players, a girl named Sylvander, turns out to be very powerful. She meets an Indian (Native American) society that has grown up within Hord. The Indians plan to take over the game as a way of regaining stolen lands. The corporation characters, the Indians, and the son with the characters he controls seem locked in struggle. To be continued?
