Heroes of the Equinox Heroes of the
Equinox / by J.C.
Mezieres and P.
Christin ; color, E. Tran-Le ; translation, Suzi Baker. --
New York : Dargaud International, 1983. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ;
29 cm. -- (Valerian Spatiotemporal Agent) -- Translation of:
Les Héros de l'équinoxe. -- Science fiction genre. --
Call no.: PN6748.V3H4 1983
Summary: The equinox is approaching on the
planet Simlane. The people are getting very old, and the
infrastructure is crumbling. The people of Simlane are sterile,
and the only way to renew the population is for a champion to
fight his way to the top of Filene, the island of children.
There at the equinox the champion will engender a new crop of
children. No local champion has been able to accomplish the
deed for quite a few years, so a galaxy-wide contest is
announced by the elders. Four outworld hopefuls arrive. They
demonstrate their powers to the population. Irmgaal is a macho
warrior with an invincible sword, who breaks up a mountain peak
to show his might. Ortzog is a defender of the invincible ideal
of intergalactictarianism, who swears to defend the senior
workers whose ideology he does not, however, share. He knocks
down a column of their outdoor theater to show his might.
Blimflim is a man of inner peace who uses gentle plants as
weapons. He plants a vine that destroys a column of the outdoor
theater to show his might. Valerian says he will try to prove
worthy, pulls out his ray gun, and just barely knocks an
architectural ornament to the ground. The crowd doesn't like
any of them, but at least Valerian is less wasteful. It will
take three days to reach the summit of the island. On the first
day they will be opposed by inorganic forces, on the second day
it's organic forces, and on the third, "traps of the spirit."
Valerian is soon stuck in a cave, while Irmgall fights lava,
Ortzog fights ice, and Blimflim has to cross a desert. They all
survive, and the next day Irmgall has to cross a fetid swamp,
Ortzog fights charging buffaloes, and Blimflim has to deal with
a large enigmatic white bird that says "Aaaa'rzaac'h!" and falls in love
with him. Valerian is still stuck in the cave, and is overrun
by rats. On the third day, the heroes are required to state how
they see the future of Simlane if their respective offspring
are in charge. Irmgall predicts galactic conquest and a
glorious empire. Ortzog calls for intensive agricultural
development and powerful alliances according to the principles
of bureaucratic centrepitalism. Blimflim sees the abandonment
of cities and a return to subsistence agriculture, meditation,
and the leadership of enlightened ascetics. Valerian has been
nowhere to be seen during all this posturing, but he finally
digs his way into the light like a mole out from under the
lawn. The host asks him the same question, and Valerian says he
doesn't have a plan, he just hopes people will be happy in
their own way. The next morning Valerian is judged the winner,
and the other three are given amnesia and a ride off the
island. Valerian is taken to the supreme mother to get busy.
Laureline gets worried and goes through all the climbing in one
night, and arrives at dawn to be greeted by a host of toddlers.
She finds Valerian, who has been depleted by the experience to
a height of about five inches. The supreme mother breaks up her
collection of miniatures to give him to Laureline, and she
hangs him in a basket in the cockpit and takes off.
