Summary: Indian police under Lieutenant Bullhead try to arrest Sitting Bull, but a gun battle breaks out and Sitting Bull is killed. Lewis Kayne and Armand Lebon are returning from Canada to the Sioux camp of Big Foot when they see and hide from a company of Buffalo Soldiers. Big Foot is gravely ill, and Heals-with-Fingers gives them the news that Sitting Bull has been assassinated. Some of Sitting Bull's aging companions have taken refuge with Big Foot. They have all decided it would be safer to go to Pin Ridge and join Red Cloud's people. Lebon is quite taken with Heals-with-Fingers' two nieces. It's December 25, 1890, and when the group leaves, Lebon and Kayne decide to go along. Three days later, troops of soldiers approach the group from all sides, and Big Foot orders a white flag to be shown. The soldiers have orders to take the Indians to Wounded Knee Creek, per a Major Whiteside. Kayne and Lebon put blankets over their heads and hide among the women. That night, with the camp surrounded by soldiers, Kayne talks about his need to settle up with whomever killed his family, and Lebon thinks mostly about the young woman Whitebird. More soldiers arrive, under a Colonel, and Major Whiteside is relieved of command. The Colonel orders a Captain Wallace to give the soldiers whiskey. The soldiers are angry still about their defeat at Little Big Horn. A group of them, drunk, starts harrassing the Indians about it, and the situation is tense. The next morning all Indian men are ordered to turn in their weapons. There is trouble, and shooting begins. The soldiers kill every man, woman, and child, except for Kayne, Lebon, and Whitebird. It is December 29, 1890. The three survivors make it to Pine Ridge, where Lebon finds a reporter, James Ramsay Ottburn of the Boston Morning Journal, and tells the story. Kayne, though he has been wounded by a gunshot, leaves for the grave of his wife, Morning Wind. Then he goes to see Barton, the crooked businessman, who he thinks will know who killed Morning Wind. Barton gives him the name Wallace. Barton then tries to kill Kayne, but Kayne kills Barton. Kayne is shot again. Wallace says it was One Eye Colson who did the deed, and Wallace also sets Kayne up for a window shot by his hired gun, Bo Walters. Kayne kills Walters, but is himself shot again. Kayne dies, and Lebon leaves with Whitebird.
