Fires

Fires / Lorenzo Mattotti. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1988. -- 64 p. : col. ill. ; 31 cm. -- Translated from the French edition, Feux, by Tom Leighton. -- On the cover, Mattotti is quoted: "I had not felt able to convey nature in my work before." -- The story is divided into six chapters. -- Call no.: PN6767.M38F5 1988

"Fire 1" 10 p. -- Summary: The battleship Anselm II arrives to investigate a mysterious island called Saint Agatha. There have been strange events, and some ships have been sunk. Lieutenant Absinthe, the narrator, is to lead the first landing party. That night they see fires on the island, and Absinthe and another officer dream of meeting fiery creatures. In the morning, on the island, Absinthe sees such a creature, but does not report it.

"Fire 2" 10 p. -- Summary: In a forest of wrecked ships, twin creatures show themselves to Absinthe and invite him to meet them at the lighthouse. There he sees them again, and he decides he wants to help protect the island. One of the other soldiers shoots a rock, and it bleeds. Absinthe kills one of the soldiers and deserts.

"Fire 3" 11 p. -- Summary: On the island, Absinthe sees the twins again, and it starts to snow rose petals. The red flakes seem to burn and change Absinthe. Soldiers come again in the morning, and find a mural of red and black that Absinthe has painted in the night.

"Fire 4" 10 p. -- Summary: On the way to the ship's brig the ship's mascot, a large dog named Golem, tries to attack Lieutenant Absinthe. At nightfall the dog is found dead on the deck, and the twins visit Absinthe in the brig.

"Fire 5" 10 p. -- Summary: The Soldiers all go to the island to finish off whatever is there, and begin to massacre each other. The twins send rose petals to convert the ship and the rest of the men, but they are resistant and determine to shell the island with artillery.

"Fire 6" 10 p. -- Summary: Absinthe hears in agony the shelling of the island. The twins help Absinthe out of the brig, and the ship blows up. Later, back in civilizaton, Absinthe becomes a painter who only paints daylight.

"Mad Jim"* p. 31-52 (plates 29-50) in Lucky Luke : Spécial
   1 (Marcinelle-Charleroi, Belgique : Dupuis, 1979). --
Summary: Lucky Luke rides into Silverbrook and steps into
the Horseshoe Saloon. Although he has never been to the
town before, everyone thinks they recognize him and they
flee in terror. It seems Lucky Luke has an evil twin named
Mad Jim, a local bad guy who is scheduled to be hung at
dawn. Two other bad guys see an advantage to be had in the
situation. For a share of the hidden loot from Mad Jim's
last bank job, they sneak an unconscious Lucky Luke into
the jail in Mad Jim's place. Jolly Jumper knows the
difference when Mad Jim starts trying to impersonate Lucky
Luke, and the horse almost gets his real master out of jail
in time, but not quite. At the hanging things go wrong and
a free-for-all begins, during which Lucky Luke is able to
sneak away. Lucky Luke tracks Mad Jim to his hideout and
captures the three outlaws. On the trail back towards
Silverbrook with his three prisoners, he is stopped by a
band of Indians who are very displeased when he tries to
make peace by giving them his harmonica. Mad Jim is able to
slip the Indians a bottle of firewater, and soon the
outlaws are free, Lucky Luke is tied to a cactus, and the
Indians are fighting among themselves. Lucky Luke rides
away on Jolly Jumper, still attached to the cactus. That
night Lucky Luke catches the outlaws again and herds them
into town, where the sheriff locks up both lookalikes
because he can't be sure. Jolly Jumper is brought in to
make the identification. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L8 1979
