Summary: A band of raiders wearing sheepskins
tricks its way into the Castle De Caulx. They are commanded by
a shepherd who never shows his face. When they leave the castle
is in flames, everything of value has been taken away, and only
one guardsman is alive, having escaped with Basil, the son of
the lord. Basil de Caulx, who seems to be seven or eight years
old, is the new lord. His peasants do their best to shelter
him, though their huts have been burned as well. The guardsman
tries to train the peasant men in fighting, but they have no
weapons. Sir Aymer de Bois-Maury is traveling in the region,
and stops for a meal with the masked shepherd. The shepherd
seems dangerous, and Bois-Maury decides not to stay the night
with him. A woman with a crossbow comes along and stays with
the peasants of De Caulx. Her name is Eloise de Montgri, and
she helps them get food by hunting. We learn that she is in
pursuit of the same raiders that have lately destroyed the
estate. Sir Aymar arrives on the De Caulx lands as well, and
Eloise vouches for him, having seen him in her father's castle
in Catalonia when she was a child. Sir Aymar's new knowledge of
the raiders' location spurs a sortie by Basil and Eloise and
their ragged army. Sir Aymar advises against it, but ultimately
joins them. They manage to flush the raiders out of their cave
by dropping burning wood into their chimney-hole. They hit the
emerging raiders with rocks from above and sharp sticks from
below, while Eloise uses her crossbow. Eloise shoots the
shepherd in the leg, then finishes him personally with her
knife. He was a cousin who mistreated her. Spring comes, and
the peasants start rebuilding the castle.
