L'Élixir du Docteur Doxey

L'Elixir du Docteur Doxey / texte et illustrations de Morris. -- Belgium : Dupuis, 1955. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Lucky Luke ; 7) -- Contents: "Lucky Luke et le Docteur Doxey" p. 3-24 ; "Chasse à l'Homme" p. 25-46. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L807 1955

"Lucky Luke et le Docteur Doxey" p. 3-24 (plates 259-280). -- Summary: Dr. Doxey and his assistant Scraggy travel the West selling bottles of patent medicine. Doxey makes the pitch, and Scraggy pretends to be crippled and then cured by the elixir. A problem comes up as they are leaving Green Valley: Scraggy has put rat poison in the latest batch to improve the color, and people are sick and angry. Lucky Luke comes upon Dr. Doxey's wagon in difficulty as it leaves Green Valley, and loans Jolly Jumper to help them get moving. Doxey ends up stealing Jolly Jumper. Lucky Luke walks into Green Valley and sees the devastation (it looks like an epidemic) and decides he better catch up with Doxey. He buys a drunken, alcoholic horse named Zig-Zag and gets to Fairbank in time to sabotage Doxey's next show and retrieve Jolly Jumper. At the next town, called Sugar Bowl, Doxey starts by poisoning the water supply. He then drives his wagon into town offering a cure for what's making everybody sick. A mob attacks the wagon and steals all the medicine, and Doxey makes no money. Next comes Oxbow Gulch, where Doxey starts by kidnapping Sheriff Bull's-Eye Bill, because Bill was wise to the game and tried to run the medicine show out of town before it got started. Lucky Luke guesses what happened, and puts a phony notice in the newspaper saying the sheriff had $5,000 on him when he disappeared. Doxey believes the story, and Lucky Luke follows him to the cabin where the sheriff is being hidden. The tables are turned, and Bull's-Eye Bill gives Doxey and Scraggy some of their own elixir to drink in their cell.

"Chasse à l'Homme" p. 25-46 (plates 281-302). -- Summary: Dr. Doxey breaks out of the Oxbow Gulch jail by setting it on fire, and Lucky Luke tracks him across the desert to Coyoteville. After Doxey gets a shave and a haircut, Lucky Luke doesn't recognize him. In the night Doxey goes around painting red dots on the faces of sleeping people and animals, so that in the morning everyone thinks there's an epidemic of measles. As "Dr. Oxyde," the doctor sells preventative injections of rainwater until he gets a customer who really has the measles. In a few days Oxyde is selling pills to a crowd when Lucky Luke realizes that "Oxyde" is an anagram for "Doxey." After a brief gunfight, Doxey escapes. Next he invents a sleeping potion, and tries to sell it in the town of La Siesta, where everybody is already sleeping. Realizing that Lucky Luke is on his trail, Doxey puts his horse's shoes and his own shoes on backwards. Lucky Luke figures it out without a problem. At the next village Doxey paints people with yellow dots in the night, but Lucky Luke stops him before morning and herds him back towards the jail in Oxbow Gulch.

Comics, no. 102 (Sept. 1946). -- Villains are The Angle,
Small-Time, Boxy, and Shoulders, all introduced here. --
Summary: Darrel Dane comes to the aid of a fleeing man by
knocking out his pursuer, but it turns out he has knocked
out Inspector Frosby who was chasing The Angle. The Angle
is a crook who always has a surprise idea, an "angle," to
avoid capture. Darrel gets arrested, but sneaks out as Doll
Man to work on the case. Hackie Joe Bilber remembers where
he dropped their man off, at a hideout where his pal
Small-Time is waiting. Doll Man hides and watches while
established gangsters Boxy and Shoulders offer to cooperate
with them. Doll Man squirts seltzer at Boxy and Shoulders,
which starts a brawl. Meanwhile the police have decided
that Darrel Dane is The Angle, so when Doll Man's phone
call comes in they think they know who to look for. The
police try to arrest Dane, and use tear gas, but Darrel
changes back to Doll Man. Things get sorted out, and the
new "crime combine" has been prevented. -- Data from Bob
