Summary: Construction on the Transcontinental Railway is stalled, in two places, near Chicago and near San Francisco. The president of the company sends a telegram to Dead Ox Gulch telling the workers to resume construction, but Black Wilson, who seems to be part of the company, secretly sends another telegram to the Wilson Boys at Dead Ox Gulch, telling them to prevent construction. These exchanges have apparently happened before, and Lucky Luke rides into Dead Ox Gulch to find the two crews at a more or less comfortable impasse. Dead Ox Gulch, by the way, is supposed to be near Chicago, though the landscape includes cactus. Once he understands the situation, Lucky Luke, a firm partisan of progress and civilization, decides to intervene on the side of the nominally pro-construction crew. After a false start, he enlists the population of the town in the cause and soon the railroad has gone a few meters past Dead Ox Gulch. A telegram to the company president elicits a celebration, and the board decides to travel out to see the new rail. On the way, in plate 354 (page 10), a Caran d'Ache cow is alarmed by the train, but the president says cows will get used to it. With Lucky Luke now officially in charge, the railway heads West. Black Wilson's crew continues to attempt sabotage without much success, and other obstacles, such as a sleeping cow, cause small detours. A tribe of Indians, called the Yellow Feet, is provoked by the conflict but gives up the chase before long. The Wilsons rally the citizens of Nothing City to reject the railroad, but a little gunplay and a little fist fighting by Lucky Luke prolongs the comedy until the construction crew can accidentally strike oil. Nothing City is suddenly wealthy and all for progress, and the construction is now halfway across the country. Black Wilson catches up via stagecoach as the crew reaches the Rocky Mountains, but his further sabotage attempts are to no avail. Wilson's motivation seems to be that he is an owner of the stagecoach company. A desert crossing is next, with a banquet in Desert City at the far edge of the desert. The board is soon (time and supplies are mysteriously elastic in this story) invited for the meeting of the two construction crews at Las Puertitas, near San Francisco. A hobo, riding the rods, has stolen the golden spike, but it is recovered for the ceremony. The company offers Lucky Luke a permanent job, but he says no, thanks, and rides away.
