Candice at Sea

Candice at Sea / by Lob and Pichard ; translated by Sean Kelly and Valerie Marchant ; letterer, Alison Antonoff ; copy editor, Susan Devins. -- New York : Heavy Metal Communications, 1977. -- 60 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- (A Heavy Metal Book) -- Call no.: PN6747.P5C2813 1977

Summary: Candice (a naked, innocent young orphan) and the Defender (her mysterious protector in a superhero outfit) are rescued from the Atlantic by the ship Morena. Adolphus, the owner of the ship, has the Defender seized, and Morena, the mistress of Adolphus, takes charge of Candice. Morena dresses Candice in nice clothes and seems to care for her, but Adolphus and Candice have a history, and he only wants to torture and exploit her. The Defender knows this, and Captain Jinks has to put him in irons to keep him quiet. Adolphus fakes an escape for Candice and the Defender, but really he just throws the Defender in a lifeboat and locks Candice in a closet. Morena gets suspicious when she finds signs of a struggle in Candice's cabin, and has Captain Jinks turn the ship around to search for the lifeboat. The Defender re-boards the ship, but in the search they also find Captain Yobbu, whose ship had earlier been sunk by the Defender. Soon both Yobbu and Adolphus are after Candice and the Defender. Captain Jinks tries to hide Candice in his cabin, and discovers that she is his long-lost daughter. Jinks gets caught up in telling the tragic story of his life, while a storm comes up and sinks the ship. Everybody but Captain Jinks makes it into a lifeboat, and they are floating together in the Atlantic when the storm passes.
