"Les Petites Cases du Moi : l'Autobiographie en Bande
Dessinée" / Thierry Groensteen. p. 58-69 in 9e Art : les
supports alternattivs." -- English summary (from p. 139):
"Autobiographical Comics. Since the beginning of the
nineties there has been a strong increase in the number of
autobiographies in French comics. This tendency is in
opposition to the themes of traditional output. It is
influenced by some great foreign authors, especially
Americans in the wake of Justin Green and Robert Crumb.
Whilst showing the importance the autobiographic genre has
gained in present day comics, Thierry Groensteen questions
the place taken by intimist and sexual confessions in this
sort of comics, observes the different strategies utilized
in the representation of oneself, and attempts to define
the particular preoccupations of the various artists
concerned." -- Call no.: folio PN6700.N44no.1

"Detenido!" (Memín) / argumento de Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;

SUMMARY: Memín tells his disapproving mother, Eufrosina,
the story of how the boys searched the cabarets looking for
Carlos's mother. Ernesto's father is also angry, blames
himself, and says he's going to start drinking again. Both
parents are sympathetic once they've heard the whole story,
however. Ricardo's mother is frantic and fainting, and his
father beats him savagely with his belt, but after an
explanation the father is proud of his son. He asks Ricardo
not to tell his mother about the beating, and Ricardo
agrees. Memín's mother sends him out for milk, and he sees
pictures of Carlos and his mother in the newspaper. Carlos
has been arrested for murder, and sent to the house of
correction. Everyone's first thought is that Ricardo's
father might be able to help Carlos, but that seems not to
be the case. The boys decide to ask their teacher. -- Call

"Maracas" (Memín) / argumento de Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
dibujó, Sixto Valencia. 32 p. in Memín, no. 11 (1983). --
SUMMARY: Carlos, Ricardo and Ernesto eat in a Chinese
restaurant. Memín goes home to get some maracas, figuring
that no cabaret will let them in because they are so young.
Memín plans to pretend they are musicians. The white boys
sing, however badly, and Memín holds it together with his
natural rhythm. Meanwhile, Carlos's mother Isabel
("Chabela") is in a tough underworld cabaret talking about
how she hates her life and how her husband abandoned her
when he got rich, though Carlos doesn't know this.
Eventually the four friends arrive at the same
establishment and find Chabela fighting off a drunk
customer. The man hits her and Carlos wades in, knocking
him down. The man pulls a gun and tries to shoot Carlos,
but Isabel gets between them and is shot. Carlos throws a
bottle and apparently kills the man. Isabel is not badly
hurt and tells her son to run before the police get there.

"Pesadilla" (Memín) / argumento, Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
dibujo, Sixto Valencia. 32 p. in Memín, no. 29 (1980). --
SUMMARY: Isabel, the mother of Carlos, becomes very
depressed when she learns that Carlos is missing out on
some of the fun with his friends because they're so poor.
She pretends to go out all night to a cabaret and come home
drunk at dawn. This, she seems to be hoping, will convince
Carlos to take his rich father's offer and move into the
mansion. Carlos is beside himself to think his mother has
gone back to her old profession, and pleads with her to
continue doing laundry for people. She says they'll talk
about it later, and that for now he should just get out of
her way. Carlos goes to play baseball with his friends, and
Memín can tell he's upset behind his smile. Memín hits a
one-handed home run by imitating the tennis player Pelón
Ozuna. -- Call no.: PN6790.M44M433no.29

"Secreto" (Memín) / argumento de Yolanda Vargas Dulché ;
dibujo de Sixto Valencia. 32 p. in Memín, no. 10 (1983). --
SUMMARY: A bunch of boys taunts Carlos, saying his mother
doesn't realy work the night shift in a factory. After all,
why does she dress so well? She's out dancing for money in
a cabaret, they say. Carlos comes out swinging, and Memín
happens by to join in the fray. Afterwards, Memín follows
Carlos home, and sees him crying. Carlos tells him to go
away and watch Ricardo's television with Ernesto, and not
say anything, but Memín spills the beans. Soon the three
friends are back to hear Carlos's story. Carlos plans to
spend the night going around to all the cabarets looking
for his mother, and wants to be left alone to do it. The
other boys refuse to leave him. -- Call no.:
