   "Le Livre Maudit" (Cap'tain Swing) p. 3-66 in Cap'tain
Swing, no. 114 (Sept. 2004). -- Summary: The Redcoat
soldiers arrest a man in the street who complains loudly of
his fate, but when he is taken to the commanding officer it
turns out he's an undercover agent, a traitor turning over
a list of patriots' names. Lord Marmaduke Langsburry, an
emisary direct from the King in London, witnesses the
transaction and asks to see the list. Lord Langsburry
pockets the list, then removes his beard to reveal that he
is indeed Captain Swing. In short order the traitor is
dead, and the fine carriage that brought "Langsburry" has
left at a gallop. The British soldiers take off after the
carriage, making it easy for Swing to sneak out of the
headquarters to hide with his old friend Professor
Griffith. The professor is puzzling over an old Rosicrucian
book he bought from an antiquarian book dealer in
Strasbourg. The reading isn't going well since it's
Greco-Latino-Hebraic in runic characters. By chance, a
soldier has seen Swing enter Griffith's house, so the
soldiers come and the two have to flee. Also there is a
sinister-looking bald man lurking in the house looking for
a chance to steal the book. The professor takes the book
with him, and they ride to Fort Ontario. Betty sets the
professor up with a place to study. The creepy bald man
returns to his home as well, on Black Skull Mountain, which
is not far from Fort Ontario. He thinks awhile, then sends
one of his superstitious Black servants, named Mumbulah, to
go to Fort Ontario on Lake Ontario and retrieve the book,
no matter whose life it costs. Meanwhile Griffith suddenly
figures out the book, and it makes him crazy. He babbles
nonsense and ancient-sounding words, and tries to kill
Mister Bluff's dog, Pouik, by hanging it by the neck with a
rope. Griffith's raving is so violent they have to tie him
up. Mumbulah arrives at the fort and tries to steal the
book, but gets locked up for his trouble. Hibou thinks
sorcery is involved. Taking the book, Swing rides out from
Lake Ontario for a few hours to a mountain cave full of
books, bottles and a smoking brazier. Swing asks the wise
man there to take a look at the book, and the wise man is
interested. He says to come back in a few days when he's
studied the book. Meanwhile, the strange bald man from
Black Skull Mountain shows up at Fort Ontario asking for
lodging. As he enters both Griffith and Mumbulah can be
heard raving from their respective lockups, and Mister
Bluff wonders if it might be the weather causing it. Hibou
says that Indians lose their spirit in captivity too, and
in sympathy lets Mumbulah out for some exercise. Mumbulah
sees his master and immediately commits suicide by jumping
from a tower. Then the bald man hypnotizes Betty from
behind without her having even seen him. He tells her to go
to town and buy a blue dress, and when she leaves the fort
on foot he kidnaps her. When Swing comes back from
delivering the book to his guru, a ransom note is found.
The Rosicrucian book must be brought to Black Skull
Mountain in exchange for Betty's life. Swing, Bluff and
Hibou retrace Swing's path to retrieve the book, and arrive
just as the wise man has deciphered it. He also starts
raving and has to be tied up. The bald man gets excited
when he mentally feels the book approaching, the book that
was "stolen from them at Tubingen." The man tries to
capture Swing rather than release Betty, and in the
struggle the book and the whole house are burned to ashes.
At that moment both of the raving scholars are released
from their spells miles apart. They get together at Fort
Ontario and agree that the destruction of the book was a
good thing. The one from the mountain, the one that Swing
calls "master," quotes Shakespeare: "There are more things
in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosopy."

The Babel Library

The Babel Library / Antonio Serra, script ; Nicola Mari, art ; translation, Violeta Jurkovic ; dialogue, Reed Chaval. -- Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Press, 1999. -- 148 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. -- (Nathan Never ; 6) -- Call no.: PN6768.N3513 1999 no.6

Summary: The story begins in the year 2095 A.D. In a framing vignette, an art collector named Estevez hires Nathan Never and two other agents from the Alpha Agency, May and April Frayn. Estevez owns a painting that was originally hinged to another that has just been stolen, and he suspects the thief will want to complete the set. Donald Frayn, father of April and May, is an obvious suspect, as he is a kind of Robin Hood who liberates stolen art from private collections and releases it to the public. April & May swear it's not a conflict for them to catch him. The three agents, with Estevez's electronic security man Johnny Neural, set up to guard the painting. July Frayn, a nanotech expert and sister of April and May, penetrates their system instantly with Donald, who is injured in the struggle. July escapes but is chased over a waterfall and is apparently dead. Donald Frayn dies, and the death is attributed to illegal technology in Johnny Neural's security system and to the nanotechnology that July had introduced to the Frayn system. Three months later, Nathan gets a call from an old friend, Anthony Russo, and arranges to meet him and his new girlfriend, Saki. When Nathan arrives at the apartment he finds a crowd gathered around Anthony's body. Witnesses say Anthony was screaming in his window, and then jumped. At the funeral Nathan meets Saki, and they agree that Anthony's death wasn't suicide. Anthony had nearly finished his thesis at the university, and Saki and Nathan go to his apartment to look at it for clues. It's not there, either in paper or in electronic form. The title was, "Topics Related to the Disappearance of the Book in Printed Form." Nobody admits to having taken the thesis, but the trail leads suspiciously to Anthony's major professor, Modens. Nathan visits the professor in his office. Modens explains how the MacIntosh Act of 1992, and subsequent anti-book riots, made printed books very rare. Nathan bluffs, saying he has a copy of Anthony's thesis. Later we see Modens go into a virtual library to read Ficciones, by Jorge Luis Borges. Still at the university, Nathan meets an old girlfriend of Anthony's, whose name is Kathy White. Professor Modens hires July Frayn as a hitwoman. Saki gets a mysterious phone call from Kathy, reminding her that Anthony had left his laptop computer with a copy of the thesis with her. July tries to kill Nathan with a nano-spider. Saki and Nathan visit Sigmund, Nathan's techie friend, who figures out the password to the thesis, and they leave the remains of the spider with Sigmund for analysis. Nathan starts reading the thesis and is soon acting strangely, shooting at hallucinations and jumping from a rooftop. Sigmund saves him in a flying car just in time, having figured out that a virus, inserted by Professor Modens, caused Anthony's death. It has the earmarks of Johnny Neural's work on the day Donald Frayn was killed. April and May visit Johnny, and find out that he is indeed working for Modens. Nathan visits Modens in his virtual library. Nathan tells the story of the thesis, about how a library of all knowledge has survived the purge of books, and is protected by a "clergy" that considers itself the only truly intelligent class of people. Prof. Modens is a member of this secret sect. Anthony had discovered evidence that the book banning of 1992 was financed by software companies. Modens had decided that preserving the secret of the library was more important than releasing the information in the thesis, because nobody but he himself would be smart enough to understand the implications. Nathan lectures him on the arrogance of professors, then releases the professor's whole virtual library to the public net. Nathan ends up, in other words, taking the part of Donald Frayn. Kathy White and Saki get together three months later to talk about Anthony. Kathy has a talent that lets her see into another reality, and she had been communicating with Anthony and helping the investigation. Anthony's presence is about to fade, and Kathy has arranged for him to meet with Saki for a goodbye.

Summary: Babette is a peasant girl in the Middle Ages. One day she sneaks away from the field in which she is working, and a nobleman named Sir Geoffroy rapes her. Babette's boyfriend, a stone mason named Germain, kills Geoffroy with his own spear. Germain is caught, imprisoned, and scheduled to die. Babette takes some food from home and bribes a guard for a few moments in the cell with Germain, and when she gets home her father beats her to death for stealing. Geoffroy's brother has Germain's hand held in boiling water for torture. Gentle Sir Aymar of Bois-Maury is visiting, and decides to leave because the whole business offends him. The brother sees this and challenges Aymar, saying that if Aymar wins Germain will go free. Sir Aymar kills the brother in a fair fight, and Germain is released. With his damaged hand Germain has trouble supporting himself, and ends up joining a band of traveling entertainers who live by thievery.
