Summary: While on vacation in the Azores, Professor Philip Mortimer discovers a mysterious cavern, and asks his friend, Captain Francis Blake, to fly to the island of Sao Miguel and see it. Mysterious acts of sabotage begin immediately. An international criminal named Olrik gets himself hired as a porter for the expedition, and soon all three are lost in a system of caves. Blake and Mortimer follow an underground river for hours, and finally come upon signs of human tunneling, and with it dangerous radioactivity. Fainting from the radiation, they are easy prey for a flock of pterodactyls. A patrol of Atlanteans rescues them and takes them to a hospital for revival, then to a throne room where a king hears arguments about their fate. They are sentenced to stay in Atlantis, but otherwise treated as friends and entitled to explanations of the history of Atlantis, and the things they see around them. Atlantis has large cities, with flying cars, and the people also do interplanetary exploration in flying saucers using the radioactive mineral as a source of energy. A conspiracy involving the captain of the guard, Magon, seems to be going forward. With Prince Ikaros, Blake and Mortimer travel to a border region to investigate. Orlik has been inciting a border tribe not only to push the conspiracy to overthrow the Atlantean government as a step toward invading the surface world, but also to demand a bigger share of the surface world once the conquest is complete. Mortimer, Blake and the Prince overhear, but are soon being pursued by the rebels. Trying to get back to the capital in time to warn the King, Blake hijacks a speedboat, while Mortimer and the Prince struggle through a forest of man-eating plants. A storm blows Blake back to where he started just in time to rescue the other two as they, having escaped the plants, are trying to steal transport. Their warning comes just in time, but the battle still goes badly for the king. During a standoff in the war room, Orlik shoots the switch that opens an old dam and begins to flood Atlantis. The King then reveals his plan to colonize another planet, and the Atlanteans hop in spaceships and fly away. Blake and Mortimer are given a little submarine in which to find their way home.
