A Look at Comics Artists in

The New Yorker

Version 3.2, 09/25/01

When Tina Brown became the editor of the New Yorker in October, 1992, comic book and strip artists began working for the magazine. According to Dave Mazzucchelli (Comics Journal 194, p. 72), "When Tina Brown became the editor, the art director, Chris Curry, was able to start using a lot of artists she'd always wanted to use, but hadn't been able to, including artists from RAW and other odd comics." Brown hired Raw co-founder (and Art Spiegelman's wife) Françoise Mouly as the new art director. The magazine soon became friendlier to comic book and strip artists, both European (Mattotti, Götting, Swarte & Loustal) and American. Not everyone seems happy with the reworked magazine; Bill Griffith, who has worked for them, used his Zippy strip on August 2, 1997 to satirize the magazine. Zippy's daughter, Meltdown wanted to see a cartoon on every page of the New Yorker, and Zippy asked, "But then, where would they put all th' deep, insightful articles on O.J. and th' lastest fashions, Melty?" Meltdown suggested, "Maybe in th' National Star or Cosmo, Daddy!" Griffith returned to his theme on April 2, 1998, with a strip character saying, "This isn't about cartoons, Bob. It's about ad revenue!" Griffith squeezed a mention noting Brown's departure from the magazine in his August 22, 1998 strip. Some of Spiegelman's covers for the magazine have been controversial, and news articles on them are easily available. Ted Rall wrote a scathing review of Spiegelman's ouvre, especially his New Yorker work, The King of Comix: With Raw, a Pulitzer Prize For Maus, and a Strategic Job at The New Yorker, Art Spiegelman Has Become Lord of All New York Cartoonists. But His Power Is No Laughing Matter for the Village Voice (July 28, 1999).

This is an index based just on what I've noticed; I haven't looked through every issue to find every piece. In fact, there might be additional artwork in the issues I've listed here. I'd be glad to hear of any corrections or additions. Additions by Chris Pyle of the University of Kentucky marked with a *. Mark Nevins pointed out that Götting's work, and the first he noted was in 1996. #Götting wrote to me, "I'm afraid i can't give you precise information about my collaboration with the NYer but i just can say i did start before 1996 (as you mention that year) with some few B/w little pics." Nevins also notes that European artists Philippe Petit-Roulet, Pierre Clement (who signs his work with a small p inside a large C much like the copyright symbol), Dupuy-Berberian, Walter Minus, and possibly Lionel Koechlin among others have done small uncredited drawings. I've missed tons of Petit-Roulet spot illos prior to March 2000. A cover by Ana Juan for a "Home" issue in the mid-90s is remembered by him, but we need an exact date. Bart Beatty highlighted Max's work. Alec Stevens pointed out his own work. Desmond Brice filled me in on Argentinian cartoonist, Nine as well as other pieces as did Robert Boyd. I've missed pieces by animator David Sheldon and illustrator Greg C. Clarke according to Dark Horse Comics' Scatterbrain (1998) comic book in which they both appear. In an interview in the Comics Journal (213, June 1999, p. 71), Carol Lay discussed working as a cartoon journalist for them. According to her, she, Mazzuchelli, Burns and Robert Grossman were doing pieces. She said she did 8 or 9 strips; I'm definitely missing Winter Wonderwear: Shopping for the Tropics at New York Department Stores. Kyle Baker apparently has done some Austin Powers movie advertising work that appeared in the NY'r, according to the Comics Journal #219. Some cartoons especially Acocella, Duffy and Wilson's can be found on-line at http://www.cartoonbank.com. As this has grown quite long, I've provided an artist's cross-reference at the end. Available on-line at: http://www.wraithspace.com/Bibliographies/HTML/New_Yorker.html. Articles on or illustrated by other cartoonists may be listed in the Comics Research Bibliography by John Bullough & Mike Rhode available on line at: http://www.rpi.edu/~bulloj/comxbib.html.
