Steiling, David.
Icon, Representation and Virtuality in Reading the Graphic
   Narrative / by David Steiling. -- 291 leaves : ill. ; 28
cm. -- Thesis (Ph.D.) University of South Florida.
Department of English, 2006. -- Includes bibliographical
references (leaves 280-284). -- Abstract (used with
   permission): "Icon," "representation," and "virtuality,"
are key elements to consider when reading multi-modal
narratives, including graphic narratives. By considering in
detail how these elements are realized in various examples,
the author shows how the study of the comics can lay
groundwork for critical reading across the technological
continuum of storytelling. The author looks at how icon,
representation, and virtuality interact in a reading of
William Hogarth's A Harlot's Progress. He then examines
each term in more detail through readings of a variety of
graphic narratives including Max Ernst's Une Semaine de
Bonte, Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland, Kurt
Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, Craig Thompson's
Blankets, Phoebe Gloeckner's Diary of a Teenage Girl, and
Posy Simmonds's Gemma Bovery. The author distinguishes
between two types of virtuality, internal and external, and
ties the construction of virtuality to reader response
theory. In exploring issues related to the icon, the author
builds on Scott McCloud's conjecture that the iconic
character is the means through which the reader inhabits
the virtual space of the graphic story. The author advances
the proposition that icons are metonymies and that graphic
narratives are centered in metonymic, not metaphoric
devices. He also undertakes a discussion of how icon
operates within the expanding tradition of the "illustrated
novel." Throughout the dissertation an attempt is made to
express observation and analysis through continuous instead
of binary descriptors in order to emphasize the cooperative
rather than oppositional arrangements of word and image
within the graphic narrative. The dissertation concludes
with an extended examination of Will Eisner's contention
that the use of stereotype is a necessity in graphic
storytelling. Examples from Frederik Strömberg's Black
Images in the Comics are used to test this theory and
illustrate its consequences. The treatise finishes with an
analysis of approaches to representation that avoid
stereotypical treatment, are inclusive but sufficiently
flexible to operate through caricature. These observations
are applied to issues of characterization and
representation in electronic gaming narrative. The author
concludes that ethics, effectiveness, reputation and
empathy are all compromised when artists resort to
   stereotypes. -- Call no.: PN6725.S7515 2006

Stein, Gertrude, 1874-1946.
Bohemians : a Graphic History / edited by Paul Buhle and
David Berger with Luisa Cetti ; introduction by Paul Buhle.
   -- Brooklyn, NY : Verso, 2014. -- 228 p. : ill. ; 27 cm. --
Includes bibliographical references (pages 227-228). --
Summary (from publisher via SkyRiver): "The
nineteenth-century countercultures that came to define the
bohemian lifestyle spanned both sides of the Atlantic,
ranging from Walt Whitman to Josephine Baker, and from
Gertrude Stein to Thelonius Monk. Bohemians is the graphic
history of this movement and its illustrious figures,
recovering the utopian ideas behind millennial communities,
and covering the rise of Greenwich Village, the multiracial
and radical jazz world, and West Coast and Midwest
bohemians, among other scenes. Drawn by an all-star cast of
comics artists, including rising figures like Sabrina
Jones, Lance Tooks, and Summer McClinton, alongside
established artists like Peter Kuper and Spain Rodriguez,
Bohemians is a broad and entertaining account of the rebel
impulse in American cultural history." -- Historical genre.

Steinberg, Saul, 1914-1999--Articles About.
"Saul Steinberg, le Dessin Revisité" / Vincent Baudoux. p.
32-39 in 9e Art : les Cahiers du Musée de la Bande
Dessinée, no. 10 (Apr. 2004). -- Begins: "Saul Steinberg
Car Steinberg a révolutionné
l'approche du dessin aussi sûrement que Picasso a
bouleversé l'art pictural." -- English summary (from p.
126): "Saul Steinberg: Drawing Revisited. From his first
anthology of drawings (All in Line, 1945), Steinberg
revolutionized the art of the cartoon. The metamorphoses of
line, the betrayal of codes of representation, the mixture
of seriousness and facetiousness were to influence several
generations of artists. Vincent Baudoux pays tribute to the
American artist and proposes ways of tackling his abundant
work." -- Includes illustrations and bibliography. -- Call

-- English summary
(from p. 150): "Comic Art in the Field. As a genre, comic
art for reporting is difficult to define. Today however, it
clearly represents a rapidly developing trend. Vincent
Bernière draws up a genealogy of this testimonial or, more
rarely, investigative comic art. He looks at the satirical
prints of Gillray, studies courtroom sketches, and examines
reports by Gustave Doré, Steinberg, Eisner, Silverstein and
Crumb. He then proceeds to draw up the inventory of the
many attempts at this genre published over the past few
years." -- Call no.: folio PN6700.N44no.7
