into Axonville, and the town appears deserted. The men of
the town are waiting in ambush, however, and Giddap soon
has a noose around his neck and is headed for a lynching.
Then a little girl, Julie Copping, cries out that Joe is
her friend, and the townspeople relent. They had thought
that Joe was part of a gang chasing Jim and Rose Copping,
Julie's parents. Julie gives Joe the map to her father's
gold strike. Joe decides he'd better go help his old friend
Jim, so he thanks the townspeople for the loan of the
necktie, takes it off, and prepares to leave. Before he can
start, Lou Marks knocks him down and steals the map. In
flashback, we learn that after Copping found the gold, the
crooked sheriff of the town of Garriot has tried to steal
his claim. Copping had shot "sheriff" Kaye in the arm, and
Copping had spent three years in jail for it. Upon his
release, Kaye was waiting with to cronies to continue the
pursuit of Copping's gold. In the present, Loe Marks
volunteers to join Giddap Joe as he rides out to find the
Coppings. Marks is sure that Joe didn't see him when he
stole the map. In the mountains, Rose Copping's horse is
frightened by a rattlesnake, and she falls to the ground
and is threatened by the snake. She wants Jim to shoot the
snake, but he is sure that the sound of the shot would
bring Kaye and his men straight to them. He lassos the
snake neatly around its "neck" and throws it aside. Rose's
horse's leg is broken, and Jim won't shoot it for the same
reason, but Rose shoots it out of compassion. Sure enough,
the couple is captured in a trice and threats to Rose soon
elicit another map from Jim. At the entry to the cave where
the gold is, Kaye stops and sends one of his men in to
check the truth of Copping's story. The man doesn't come
out, so Kaye sends another man in. Giddap Joe and Lou Marks
(Lou having had a change of heart) were waiting inside the
cave and have overpowered the two men. Joe then steps out
of the cave and arrests Kaye. -- Call no.:

Sheriffs.
"Trouble in Wolf's Head Canyon" (Roy Rogers and Trigger) 10
   p. in Roy Rogers and Trigger, no. 102 (June 1956). --
Summary: Roy Rogers and Pat Brady have assembled a
"gyro-glider" in sheriff Bob Marsh's back yard. The sheriff
gets a call from the Indian hospital saying Dr. John Cloud
Mountain has been injured in a Jeep accident and wants to
see Roy. Dr. Cloud Mountain is a "brilliant Navajo surgeon"
and a crusader for "white man medicine," who has detractors
among the Indian medicine men. His nurse and fiancée, Marie
Bluebell, seems to have been kidnapped while he was
unconscious at the site of the wreck. The doctor suspects
it was all the work of her father Yellow Singer and her
half-brother Short Bull, both bitter opponents of the
hospital. Roy and John figure out that Marie Bluebell is
being held in a small remote canyon, and to avoid shooting
Roy sneaks in for a landing at night in his new and silent
man-powered helicopter-glider. Roy and Marie sneak out as
far as where Trigger is waiting, but then the shooting
starts and Roy tells Marie to ride away. She doesn't go
far, and comes back in the nick of time to save Roy. John
and Marie get married, and Yellow Singer gives the bride
away as a condition for not going to jail. -- Call no.:

"Shermlock Shomes In The Hound Of The Basketballs!" (Dep't:
   Crime) / art: W. Elder. in Mad, no. 16 (Oct. 1954). --
Summary (by Shayna Sherman): Shermlock's partner Whatsit
thinks Shermlock is dead because Shermlock's enemy Arty
Morty shot him, but it was only a statue that got shot, but
actually the statue wasn't shot, it was Shermlock, but he
isn't dead. Pru Basketball of the Basketball family asks
for Shermlock's help, because her uncle Coolidge Basketball
has died mysteriously. Shermlock leaves Whatsit at
Basketball Hall to be the woman's bodyguard and pretends to
go away. The hound of the Basketballs turns out to be a
neighbor's dog searching for Red-Heart dog food, which Pru
keeps in her room. The uncle died because he thought the
dog's howling proved the reality of a legendary Devil's
curse, and Pru knew he had a heart condition and wanted to
inherit. At the end the neighbor proves to have a long red
tail. -- Keywords: Sherlock Holmes, mystery, Hound of the
