Seduction of the Innocent--Miscellanea.
A Rhetorical Analysis of the Entertaining Comics Group's
'New Trend' Series, 1950-1956 / by Brian Allan Hess. -- Ann
Arbor, MI : Proquest Information and Learning Company,
   2003. -- 236 leaves ; 22 cm. -- Dissertation (Ph.D.),
Regent University, 2003. -- Includes bibliographical
   references (leaves 197-236). -- Photocopy. -- Abstract:
During their brief six-year run, EC's "New Trend" titles
showed a sophistication unknown in the modest comic book
form before or since, tackling such difficult topics as the
role of the family, racial and sexual discrimination, and
American foreign policy abroad through a variety of genres:
war, crime, science-fiction and satire. The gaudy and often
violent style of these stories made them easy targets of a
Senate subcommittee investigation of juvenile delinquency
held in the Spring of 1954, prompted in part by the furor
caused by Dr. Frederic Werthan's book Seduction of the
Innocent (1954). This study will explore the motivations
and faulty logic behind Wertham's book, the reasons EC
Comics were controversial in the 1950s, and why they remain
so popular to this day. Consequently, the reader will
understand why William M. Gaines' EC Comics were a
watershed in the history of American popular culture, and
an important historical phenomenon of the 1950s. -- Call
