The Secret of the Incas

Summary: Aunt Sidonia wins some money in the lottery and buys a fixer-upper. During the remodeling Spike and Suzy find an Inca bell in the basement and place it in the empty turret on the roof. That night an Inca man climbs up to look at the bell, and the kids pull the ladder from under him and capture him. His name is Dr. Hatlcoatl, and he says he heard about the bell from the house's previous owner. It's a magic bell, and the Doctor delivers a mysterious and incomplete warning about it before passing out. Trying to check out the warning, Aunt Sidonia and the kids find a secret room under the house, and Sidonia gets trapped by strange mechanisms. Suzy and Spike are overcome by a green gas. Ambrose rescues them, and they find a statue containing a piece of cloth with strange symbols on it. They take the cloth to Professor Barnabas, who doesn't quite know what to make of it, but photographs it for further study. They take the original to the hospital to show Dr. Hatlcoatl, who pulls a gun on them, reveals that he is not really a doctor, grabs the cloth and escapes. Returning home they find Hatlcoatl and henchmen ransacking the house looking for the "Tumi," the statue from the hidden room. After repelling the invaders, they find the Tumi sitting in plain sight, and immediately Ambrose is hit by a suction-cup arrow with a warning attached: A great disaster will befall Peru if the "secret of the three Tumis" is revealed. The bowman, dressed in a Tumi costume, escapes. Using one of Professor Barnabas's gadgets, a "sound tapper," the party listens to what the statue has to say: "Danger! Beware!" Based on this they decide to fly to Peru. Upon their arrival they are kidnapped by Hatlcoatl, who steals the Tumi and leaves them tied up. "Onu Ogima," the person in the Tumi costume, has also made the trip and frees them. He disappears again, leaving them a helicopter. They overtake Hatlcoatl and take back the Tumi, and using the drawing from the first Tumi as a map they find a second Tumi. A map in this one sends them towards Machu-Picchu. Hatlcoatl intercepts them and the two parties proceed together with Aunt Sidonia held hostage in Hatlcoatl's car. Escaping from Hatlcoatl and his men again, the friends enjoy the hospitality of a Peruvian family home. In the night Hatlcoatl steals both Tumis and sabotages the brakes on the car. Next morning the friends crash the car in a river and are again helped out by Ogima. They find a railroad and a handcar, and soon resume their way towards Machu-Picchu. Hatlcoatl slows them down with a landslide and beats them to Machu-Picchu. At dawn the third Tumi is found and points to a spot downhill where our friends happen to be standing. Trying to hide from Hatlcoatl, Suzy falls into a river and is swept into a cave where she finds a giant anaconda. Spike then stumbles upon a door to the same chamber, but before they can open it Ogima warns them to stop. Hatlcoatl shoots Ogima, who is then revealed to be Jones, the previous owner of Aunt Sidonia's new house. Hatlcoatl and one henchman go into the cave, see the snake, and flee in terror. Ambrose goes in and hits the snake with a rock, and in the confusion Suzy is rescued. The snake gets out, though, and soon the army shows up because of seismographic disturbances caused by the snake. Bullets and hand grenades don't stop it, and the pilots are afraid to fly their planes against it. Ambrose grabs a plane and takes off, with Spike as gunner, and they kill the anaconda with missiles.

The Secret of the Salamander

The Secret of the Salamander / by Jacques Tardi ; English translation, Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier ; lettering, Monisha Sheth ; cover colors, Rachelle Menashe ; reprint editors, Diana Schutz and Terry Nantier. -- Milwauke, OR : Dark Horse Comics, 1992. -- 47 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. -- (The Most Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec). -- Translation of: Le Secret de la Salamandre. -- Funny horror genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.T3S413 1992

The story begins in 1933, with a narrator telling the story in retrospect of Lucien Brindavoine and his experiences in the First World War. Adele Blanc-Sec is in suspended animation until the last page but one of the story, but plans to either kill or revive her motivate certain characters throughout. Mouginot is the man who knew the secret of immortality and suspended animation, as given to him by a 3,000 year old mummy. Dieuleveult had Mouginot killed, and joined the army as Major Pochard to hide from prosecution. Private Brindavoine, in the trenches, gives himself gangrene, finds a hidden crypt and hears a talking idol (channeling from Egypt for the mummy) tell him how to bring Adele Blanc-Sec back to life. The key word that Brindavoine is supposed to remember is "Megalobatrachus Japonicus." Major Pochard amputates Brindavoine's arm and saves his life, because he hears Brindavoine raving about Adele Blanc-Sec and immortality. Brindavoine is demobilized and goes back to Paris to drink alcohol all day. During this time the Mafia is coming into Paris, and Inspector Caponi gets assigned to find out what they're doing. Caponi is given two assistants, named Rivière and Ribière. Simon Flageolet, who stayed out of the war on a false medical certificate given by Dieuleveult, can't refuse when Dieuleveult tells him to watch Brindavoine and keep him away from Adele Blanc-Sec. Brindavoine starts seeing salamanders, and thinks it's delirium tremens. An American named Otto Lindenberg is getting together a worldwide group of influential people to secretly rule the world, and the Mafia wants a partnership. The Mafia also wants the secret of immortality, and has sent an agent to France to find it and take Mouginot's machines. Brindavoine finally staggers into the Natural History Museum in Paris, and sees a giant stuffed salamander in a case labelled "Megalobatrachus Japonicus." He breaks the case and finds a letter addressed to himself inside the head of the salamander. The letter tells about eternal life, and how to revive Adele Blanc-Sec. He goes to Mouginot's house to do the revival, and as he arrives the police and the Mafia kill each other. Once the revival is complete, Brindavoine leaves with Adele Blanc-Sec, and the mummy causes the house to burst into flame, protecting the secret. Frequent footnotes reference stories called "Mummies on Parade," "Flowers in the Rifle," "Adieu, Brindavoine," "The Mad Scientist," and "The Demon of the Eiffel Tower." All of these can be found in English in the Dark Horse Comics periodical Cheval Noir (1989-1993), but only the last one has been found separately published.

The Secret of the Unicorn

The Secret of the Unicorn / Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- Boston : Little, Brown, 1974. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Tintin) -- (An Atlantic Monthly Press Book) -- Sequel: Red Rackham's Treasure. -- Translation of: Le Secret de la Licorne. -- Call no.: PN6747.H4T52913 1974

Summary: Thomson and Thompson are arrested while trying to stop a wave of pickpockets at the Old Street Market. Tintin buys a model ship and immediately two insistent men try to buy it from him. He shows it to Captain Haddock, and Haddock notices that it's a model of his ancestor's ship, the Unicorn. Tintin's model is stolen, and he suspects one of the men who was trying to buy it. Indeed one of them, Mr. Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, has an identical model, but not the same one. While he's away Tintin's flat is ransacked. While cleaning up Tintin finds a bit of parchment with mysterious words on it, that must have fallen out of the model ship. Tintin goes to tell Haddock of this development, and finds him reading Sir Francis Haddock's journal. He describes a dramatic sea battle with pirates led by Red Rackham. The Unicorn is defeated and Haddock is captured, but he escapes, kills Rackham, and blows up his ship. At the end of the journal the elder Haddock describes making three models of the Unicorn, one for each of his sons. Tintin figures out there must be a parchment in each one. On the way to Haddock's, Tintin's wallet with the parchment was stolen but he remembers what was on it. Going to visit Mr. Sakharine again, they find that his parchment has been stolen as well. The suspect in both thefts is the other man who was trying to get Tintin's model originally. When Tintin and Haddock return to Tintin's flat they find that very man waiting for them, but before he can say anything he is the victim of a drive-by shooting. The newspapers announce his death. That night Thomson and Thompson recover Tintin's wallet with the parchment still in it. A few days later Tintin is taken prisoner and quizzed about the parchments by an anonymous voice. Tintin escapes from the basement to find he's being held at Marlinspike Hall by antique dealers Max and G. Bird. He telephones Haddock, who can't get the message straight. After a chase by the dealers, their butler Nestor and their large dog Brutus, Tintin is caught again. He is saved by Snowy, who has been tracking his master. Haddock, Thompson and Thomson then show up. Haddock has finally understood the telephone call with the help of the man who had been put in the hospital by the drive-by shooting. One of the Bird brothers, Max, escapes. The parchments are now all missing, but when the pickpocket is apprehended, he turns out to be a kleptomaniac who has collected and alphabetized a whole wall of wallets. Max Bird's wallet has two of the parchments, and after Max is captured the third is found on him. Held up to the light together, the three reveal the latitude and longitude where the Unicorn sank.
