Rodéo (Lucky Luke)

Rodéo / Morris. p. 55-116 in Lucky Luke : Spécial 1 (Marcinelle-Charleroi, Belgique : Dupuis, 1979). -- Originally published as an album in 1949, though the plates are dated 1948. -- Contents: " Rodéo" p. 57-74 ; "Lucky Luke à Desperado-City" p. 75-95 ; "La Ruée vers l'Or de Buffalo Creek" p. 96-113. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L8 1979

"Rodéo" p. 57-74 (plates 51-68) -- Summary: Lucky Luke rides into Navajo City to find a big rodeo planned for the next day. There's only one room left at the Beer Barrel Saloon, which Lucky Luke wins in a fist-fight with Cactus Kid, a local bully. The next day both men enter the rodeo, and though Cactus Kid resorts to sabotage it is Lucky Luke who wins the grand prize of $1,000. Cactus Kid promptly steals the money (both the prize and the gate money) and leads a posse on a chase, which ends when the posse sees smoke signals and runs in fear of Indians. Lucky Luke can read smoke signals and since these don't make sense he realizes that Cactus Kid must be making them. A real Indian shows up as well, and frightens Cactus Kid so badly that he is knocked unconscious, horse and all, in a collision with Lucky Luke. Lucky Luke stops a passing stagecoach and has Cactus Kid delivered to the sheriff of Navajo City, all wrapped up with the money the town earned for the rodeo.

"Lucky Luke à Desperado-City" p. 75-95 (plates 69-89) -- Summary: As he is riding toward Desperado City, Lucky Luke is warned about a couple of outlaws called the Pistol Brothers, who have made the town unliveable. Indeed the population sign at the town limit shows a rapid decline, the cemetery is full, and the undertaker looks very prosperous. There is a sheriff, who spends much of his time in barrels and is completely ineffective. The sheriff's name is Bill Boney, though he isn't named until album 6 in the story "Le Retour des Frères Dalton." Lucky Luke soon encounters the Pistol Brothers, who behave badly, and knocks them both unconscious. Seeing this, the townspeople hire Lucky Luke to drive the stagecoach out to get the miners' payroll. Nobody else will do it because the Pistols will rob it as a matter of course. When they stop the stage this time, however, Lucky Luke has put a jack-in-the-box in the strongbox, gets the drop on them, and puts the Pistol Brothers in jail. A mysterious "boss" orders Lucky Luke killed, and soon at least a dozen men are shooting at Lucky Luke, including the Pistol Brothers, who have been freed by their friends. The Pistol Brothers figure that Lucky Luke will son run out of ammunition, so they wait for him, trap him in the gun store and take him out to be hanged from a tree. A stampede of cattle through the town interrupts the hanging, and from the tree Lucky Luke spots the undertaker preparing to shoot him. The undertaker, it turns out, was the ringleader, stirring up trouble to improve his business. Soon the criminals are in jail, the saloon is blown up by the townswomen, a bookstore is opened, the gun shop is closed, and the town is re-named "Justice City."

"La Ruée vers l'Or de Buffalo Creek" p. 96-113 (Plates 90-104, 106-108) -- Summary: Lucky Luke comes across an unsuccessful prospector sleeping by Buffalo Creek. As a joke, Luke drops his own grandfather's souvenir nugget into the prospector's gold pan, and hides to watch what will happen. Joe the prospector wakes up, sees the nugget, does a double take and a cartwheel, and heads for town to register his claim. Lucky Luke figures the joke has gone far enough, but when he tries to catch up with Joe and explain, Joe thinks he's a claim jumper and fires on him. Within minutes of Joe's arrival, the whole town is on its way to Buffalo Creek, and by the next day the railroad has arrived. The new town doesn't want to hear Lucky Luke's story about a joke and he gets put in jail. A criminal businessman in New York gets rich selling shares of the Buffalo Creek mines, and retires to Florida. People in Buffalo Creek start giving up by about the third day, when no more gold is found. They all start fishing because there are lots of fish in the creek. Someone notices the initials and date on the original souvenir nugget (1849). The population vanishes, leaving Lucky Luke to dig his own way out of jail.
