Rebel

Rebel / story and illustration by Pepe Moreno ; script and dialogue by Robb Hingley, Pete Ciccone, Kenny Sylvester. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1986. -- -- 70 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Serialized in Heavy Metal in 1985. -- Call no.: PN6777.M6R413 1986

Summary: New York City, in the year 2002 A.D., is a ruin from which most people have fled. Gangs mark and protect their turf, looting abandoned businesses for supplies. Rudy and Gypsy outsmart the Black Knights in their armed hotrod, only to collide with an armored truck of the Sanitation Police. They are sentenced to execution on the spot when a sniper kills all six policemen. It's Rebel. Rebel is a gang leader with bigger plans than turf and survival. The Rebel gang beats the Black Knights again, but this time a column of smoke results, that gets the attention of Doll, the leader of the Skinheads. The Skinheads control the remaining tower of the World Trade Center, and have connections with the military in Cosmo City. Through a telescope on the observation deck, Doll points out Rebel to a Major Kessler, and Kessler thinks he recognizes Rebel. The Skinheads are hunters who provide slaves and body parts to Cosmo City, under Kessler's supervision. A convoy of slaves in Sanitation Police trucks is scheduled, and Rebel leads an ambush to free the prisoners. Among them is Tora, the leader of the Zeros, and the Rebel and Zero gangs forge an alliance. Meanwhile Kessler figures out that Rebel is actually a certain Lt. Lawrence, and the government starts to be a little more frightened of the gangs. Back at the ambush site, one of the police calls out to Rebel, and Rebel recognizes him as a fellow paratrooper from the last civil war. The man has come to ask Rebel to lead the underground in Cosmo City. Rebel turns him down. They discover that while the ambush was happening, one of the Rebels' vans was attacked elsewhere, and that Rebel's girlfriend Lori has been kidnapped by Skinheads. With binoculars they see her tied to an antenna atop the World Trade Center. While part of the gang launches a diversionary attack, Rebel climbs the building and finds that the body on the tower is not Lori, and that it was a trap. Rebel jumps, opens a parachute, and is picked up by Rudy and Gypsy. They escape in a hail of gunfire. Rebel loads the van with explosives and drives through abandoned subways to plant the explosives under the tower. Meanwhile Kessler has arrived at the tower, with permission to command the whole army and destroy New York once and for all. The explosion fells the World Trade Center and ends the invasion, but the Rebels are picked up by Sanitation Police as they emerge from the subway. The Zeros rescue them, and the two gangs promise a united front against the next invasion.

Summary: Jonas Fink (name changed from Finkel in the earlier volumes) and Tatiana Gostrov are in love. Tatiana is the daughter of a Russian diplomat, and when Jonas sends her flowers her parents start to investigate. Tatiana is soon forbidden to see Jonas. Mr. Pinkel, the bookstore owner, is doing illegal translations of literary works, and the group of students that includes Tatiana and Jonas drops one of them while running from the police. The lovers keep meeting on the sly, but Tatiana's father's career will be over if anybody finds out. Pinkel has a truckload of illegal literature in the basement of his store, and the night before Pinkel is to be arrested the students get together with Jonas' plumber friend Slavek and transport the books to a warehouse. Jonas' mother, who is by now badly worn down by the factory work, gets news that her husband has been sentenced to yet another ten years in prison for insubordination. The Gostrovs pack up their daughter and head for Moscow.

USNA : the United States of North America / words by David

and design by Dave Casey ; with foreword by Will Ferguson.
   -- Vancouver, BC : USNA Publications, 2012. -- 211 p. :
ill. ; 23 cm. -- Summary (from SkyRiver): A time in the
future when our two great countries, Canada and the United
States, have amalgamated. Within the U.S.N.A. and
especially in parts of the former country of Canada, there
is a growing discontent. It's not a fight to return to the
days when Canada and the United States were separate
countries. It's about a return to ideals, when the policies
of the government represented the best interests of the
people, not the best interests of those who govern. The
rebels are planning the return of their leader, the exiled
ex-prime minister of Canada, Samuel Stern. To combat this
threat, a new organization has been created by the
administration of USNA. It's a covert homeland security
force; the Strategic Home Alliance Defense Organization
(S.H.A.D.O.). Operating on the fringes of the law, their
mission is simple: locate and eliminate any rebel activity
using deadly force if necessary. USNA: The United States of
North America is the story of the people's fight against
tyranny. It takes place in our own back yard. -- Science

Tokyopop, 2008. -- Originally published by Daiwon C.I.,
Inc. in Korea, 1998-1999. -- "Revenge. Three hundred years
ago the Sorcerer Kalutika Maybus sealed the vampire
Deshwitat in limbo after killing his fiancee, Lilith. For
centuries, Deshwitat's mind calculated revenge while his
body slumbered...until now. A band of spiritual
investigators has inadvertently broken the seal that binds
him, and Deshwitat has been released. Redemption. A lot has
changed since the 17th century. Cars have replaced
carriages, the Internet connects the world, and vampires
have become the stuff of legend. But beneath the veneer of
technology, magic and religion still reign supreme.
Kalutika is the most powerful person in the world, although
few actually know he exists. Prophecy foretold that
Kalutika would destroy the Earth. Deshwitat's quest is now
not just one of revenge, but of redemption...for himself,
and the world. Rebirth. Joined by an excommunicated
exorcist and a spiritual investigator, Deshwitat begins his
bloodquest. The hunted is now the hunter!" -- Fantasy
