Pollock, Ian.
Ian Pollock's Illustrated King Lear : complete & unabridged
/ William Shakespeare. -- New York : Workman Publishing,
   1984. -- 139 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- Summary (from
OCLC): Shakespeare's tragedy of a royal father and his
daughters is presented scene by scene in comic book format.
As flies are to wanton boys, so are we to th' gods: they
kill us for their sport, howls King Lear. In artist Ian
Pollock's surreal interpretation of Shakespeare's classic
tragedy, the abstract wail of "the unaccomodated man" is
dramatized in subtle shadings of the old king's anguish.
Every line of dialogue is preserved, and every scene is
illustrated in full-color panels arranged on the page in
comic book format. As Lear loses his crown, his daughters,
his youth, and his dignity, Pollack's paintings keep pace,
raising the tension to the level of live performance, and
making the nuances of speech and action vividly clear.
Pollack's rendition of King Lear is an invaluable aid to
both veteran and potential Shakespeare readers. -- Call

Waltz with Bashir : a Lebanon war story / Ari Folman, David
   Polonsky. -- New York : Metropolitan Books, 2009. -- 117 p.
: col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Summary (from SkyRiver): In Beirut
in September 1982, while Israeli soldiers secured the area,
a Christian militia entered the refugee camps of Sabra and
Shatila and massacred hundreds, if not thousands, of
Palestinians. Ari Folman was one of those Israeli soldiers,
but for more than twenty years he remembered nothing of
that night. Then came a friend's disturbing dream and with
it Folman's need to excavate the truth of the war in
Lebanon and answer the crucial question: What was he doing
during the hours of slaughter at Sabra and Shatila?
Stunningly original in form, Waltz with Bashir follows
Folman's journey deep into the darkness of Beirut. Drawing
on the stories of other soldiers and his own returning
fragments of memory, Folman painfully and candidly pieces
together the war and his place in it: the senselessness of
   the soldiers' orders; the fear that pervades every moment;
the casual bloodshed of civilians, culminating in the
massacres themselves. The result is a graphic novel that is
as damning as it is beautiful. An indictment of violence of
extraordinary power. -- Autobiographical genre. -- Call

Polyamory.
Wonder Woman : Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter
Comics, 1941-1948 / Noah Berlatsky. -- New Brunswick, New
   Jersey : Rutgers University Press, 2015. -- 251 p. : ill. ;
24 cm. -- (Comics Culture) -- Includes bibliographical
references and index. -- Summary (from publisher via
SkyRiver): "William Marston was an unusual man--a
psychologist, a soft-porn pulp novelist, more than a bit of
a carny, and the (self-declared) inventor of the lie
detector. He was also the creator of Wonder Woman, the
comic that he used to express two of his greatest passions:
feminism and women in bondage. Comics expert Noah Berlatsky
takes us on a wild ride through the Wonder Woman comics of
the 1940s, vividly illustrating how Marston's many quirks
and contradictions, along with the odd disproportionate
composition created by illustrator Harry Peter, produced a
comic that was radically ahead of its time in terms of its
bold presentation of female power and sexuality. Himself a
committed polyamorist, Marston created a universe that was
friendly to queer sexualities and lifestyles, from kink to
lesbianism to cross-dressing. Written with a deep affection
for the fantastically pulpy elements of the early Wonder
Woman comics, from invisible jets to giant multi-lunged
space kangaroos, the book also reveals how the comic
addressed serious, even taboo issues like rape and incest.
Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter
Comics reveals how illustrator and writer came together to
create a unique, visionary work of art, filled with bizarre
ambition, revolutionary fervor, and love, far different
from the action hero symbol of the feminist movement many
of us recall from television." -- Call no.: PN6728.W62 Z5B4
