Pharagonesia & Other Strange Stories

Pharagonesia & Other Strange Stories / Jean Giraud. -- New York: Epic Comics, 1988. -- (Moebius ; 6) -- 72 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Call no.: PN6747.G5A4 1987 v.6

Contents:
"Shore Leave on Pharagonesia" 24 p. -- Summary: Earthman J.D. Foster gets a pass from the spaceport to see the town, on a local holiday: Mutation Day. Most places are closed, but the cab driver takes him to Bartinflor's bar, which is always open. Foster is served a cup of koks, but drinks it without frapping it and is immediately paralysed. Soon he begins to mutate, and will become contagious if something isn't done. The bar staff stuffs him into a bag and takes him to a witch doctor. The treatment is too expensive, so they try a do-it-yourself procedeure at a place of power one of them knows about. The treatment seems to be a success, though there's something a little strange still about the Earthman. They get him back to his ship just in time. A month later in space the crew learns he wasn't really cured. Also printed in Exotics (Dark Horse Comics, 199?). Another translation was serialized in Heavy Metal, v. 4 no. 4-5 (July-Aug. 1980).

"Absoluten Calfeutrail" 8 p. -- Summary: A story almost without words, in which a man falls through a series of backgrounds and ends up making a mushroom cloud over a desert. This version was also printed in The Man from the Ciguri (Dark Horse Comics, 1996?). The title is made up from the words 'absolute' and 'calfeutrer,' the latter meaning 'to seal' in French, according to the notes with this printing. A different version was printed as "Free Fall" in Heavy Metal, v. 1, no. 11 (Feb. 1978), and again in The Best of Heavy Metal, 1977-1979 (1982).

"The Hunt for the Vacationing Frenchman" 6 p. -- Summary: A story in which Major Grubert, not quite the same character as we see later in the Airtight Garage, conducts a big-game style hunt for a vacationing Frenchman. His assistant, Umberto Manteca, convinces him that the stress of the hunt is too much, so Grubert goes on vacation and Manteca immediately captures him. Also printed in The Man from the Ciguri (Dark Horse Comics, 1996?).

"White Nightmare" 12 p. -- Summary: Four white supremacists try to kill an immigrant Arab on a moped. Everything goes wrong. They injure themselves, draw a hostile crowd, get arrested, and some of them change their ideas. THen their leader wakes up, and it was all a dream. So then they go out and kill the Arab, and people watch and don't interfere. Also printed in H.P.'s Rock City (Dark Horse Comics, 199?).

"The Apple Pie" / Claudine Giraud, story. 4 p. -- Summary: Every Tuesday Lili's mom bakes a pie, and Lili has dangerous daydreams about motorcycles and sex when she should be helping. This story was done for the French women's comic Ah Nana. Also printed in H.P.'s Rock City (Dark Horse Comics, 199?).

"Double Escape" 2 p. -- Summary: A story without words. A prisoner levitates from his cell, and a guard sees him flying around outside and shoots him. Then the prisoner's astral body levitates. Also printed in The Man from the Ciguri (Dark Horse Comics, 1996?).

"Rock City" 7 p. -- Summary: Story without words. A man wakes up, gets up, leaves his dwelling, is singled out by surveillance cameras, and kills a policeman. He is pursued by other policemen, and jumps from a tower. A net catches him and he is taken to an operating room, then leaves the hospital to perform in a rock concert. The story ends the next morning with the man waking up, identically to the beginning except that this time we see a video audience. Also printed in H.P.'s Rock City (Dark Horse Comics, 199?). The first English printing was in Heavy Metal, v. 4, no. 7 (Apr. 1980).

These summaries are from European Comics in English Translation (Jefferson, NC : McFarland & Company, 2002). Used with permission.

"Pharas" 9 p. Chapter 6 of Passages / Andreas ; J.-M. & R.
Lofficier, translation ; Karen Casey-Smith, lettering (New
York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1990). -- Summary:
Pharas enters and makes Rork take off his dark cowl, and
other clothing, to reveal that the clothes are empty and
that Rork really isn't there. Pharas takes the assembled
company into a spherical ship, apparently manned by people
from the undersea civilization, and they journey to where
Rork can be seen in suspended animation, caught between
worlds. Deliah tries to free him with her powers, which
Pharas thinks will ruin everything, when suddenly Adam
Niels hits the spherical ship with an arrow to its fatal
point, and blows it up. Adam has figured out that it was
this ship that earlier destroyed his laboratory. Adam
reveals that it was he who hired Raffington Stevens. In the
confusion, Rork and Deliah have teleported together, but
Pharas says they probably didn't arrive anywhere together.

Summary: Rork tells of his adoptive parents, and how at age
10 he had a dream introducing him to another world, and
particularly to a teacher named Tanemanar. On waking up
after three days, he leaves his parents for Tanemanar, and
never sees them again. An evil-looking person, later named
"Pharas," appears while villagers are burning down Rork's
childhood home, though the parents got safely away. This

Summary: Rork studies for many years with Tanemanar, who is
also called The Dream Master, and has one last thing to
learn. A message comes from The Captain that it is time, so
teacher and pupil journey to a kind of ships' graveyard
where Rork rides a giant snail called the Passmaster to a
snail cemetery on another planet. This is the great secret:
teleportation. Tanemanar warns Rork that he can only do it
once more, and then Pharas will show up and make him forget

in Wright's house by the grey dust, or something related to
it. In a chapter with no dialogue, only one caption, and
other words only in monochromatic flashbacks from earlier
chapters, Rork has to teleport to get out of the house, and
is met immediately after by Pharas, who makes him forget

Rork explains to Stevens that he escaped from the
train-and-dynamite death trap by teleporting again, because
Pharas only repressed the secret in his mind instead of
erasing it. Then he tells how Deliah Darkthorne and
Ebenezer Aldridge had set up the trap under the influence

Phenicle, Kevin.
Wizzywig : Portrait of a Serial Hacker / by Ed Piskor. --
   Marietta, GA : Top Shelf Productions, 2012. -- 286 p. :
ill. ; 24 cm. -- "They say 'What You See Is What You Get,'
but Kevin 'Boingthump' Phenicle could always see more than
most people. In the world of phone phreaks, hackers, and
scammers, he's a legend. His exploits are hotly debated:
could he really get free long-distance calls by whistling
into a pay phone? Did his video-game piracy scheme
accidentally trigger the first computer virus? And did he
really dodge the FBI by using their own wiretapping
software against them? Is he even a real person? And if
he's ever caught, what would happen to a geek like him in
federal prison? Inspired by the incredible stories of
real-life hackers, Wizzywig is the thrilling tale of a
master manipulator, his journey from precocious child
scammer to federally wanted fugitive, and beyond. In a
world transformed by social networks, data leaks, and
digital uprisings, Ed Piskor's debut graphic novel reminds
us how much power can rest in the hands of an audacious kid
with a keyboard." -- Alternative genre. -- Call no.:
