Summary: California, 1927. Expert pilot Babel Man is approached by a young aircraft designer named Bobby Hall, with a proposal. Hall has a design he is sure will win a trophy if Man will agree to fly the plane. Hall is penniless, and Man doesn't have nearly enough money to build an airplane, though the drawings look good. A movie producer named Tommy Waldoc makes them an offer. He'll finance the plane if he can use the story as a movie plot. This is agreeable all around. The plane will be called the Waldoc Special. Bobby Hall is soon having and affair with Waldoc's girlfriend Curly. A rival filmmaker named Willy Epstein finds out about the airplane project, which is being kept secret, and starts surveillance of the workshop. Epstein learns about Curly and Bobby Hall, and Epstein has a grudge becasue Curly is his ex-wife. Epstein lets Waldoc know about Curly's affair. Waldoc soon has the airplane destroyed and Hall beaten up. Waldoc knocks Curly around, too. The next night Bella Palmer, Babel Man's partner, happens to be on the scene when Curly tries to shoot Willy Epstein. Bella gets shot, but Epstein is okay, and Curly goes to jail. Bella's wound isn't a bad one. Epstein is grateful and decides to make his own aviation film, and also to bankroll Man and Hall to build another plane in secret, this time to be called the Palmer Special. As the summer goes on, Waldoc finds out that Epstein is making a competing film and begins to suspect the airplane project. Waldoc has been doing a lot of publicity for his movie, and has offered a big cash prize for an airplane race. Babel Man gets hurt by one of Tommy Waldoc's thugs who sneaks into Bobby Hall's hangar at night to confirm the existence of the airplane. Man's pilot friend from St. Paul, Gertie, arrives with the motor for the airplane and installs it. Waldoc tries to destroy the Palmer Special in a complicated traffic "accident" as it is being taken to the airport in a truck. Bobby Hall is killed, but the Special isn't damaged. Epstein and Mann resolve to win Waldoc's trophy for Bobby Hall, because they're sentimental, a weakness that comes with being Jewish. Indeed, the prize is won, and Man refuses to shake Waldoc's hand when he accepts it. The trophy is mounted on Bobby Hall's Tombstone.
