No Pasarán!

No Pasarán! / Vittorio Giardino ; translation by Stefano Gaudiano ; lettering by Ortho. -- New York : Nantier, Beall, Minoustchine, 2000- . -- col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (ComicsLit) -- A series set near the end of the war against fascism in Spain (the Spanish "civil war.") An introduction by the author in vol. 1 sets the scene, both describing Max Friedman, the main character, and giving a brief history of the war in Spain, 1930-1939. -- LIBRARY HAS: v. 1-3. -- Call no.: PN6767.G5N613 2000

Summary (v. 1): The story begins with a Major Guido Treves confronting a political commisar about discipline and bureaucracy versus good sense. Treves stops the execution of an officer who has saved the lives of half his men by retreating without orders, and earns the emnity of Comissar Kusic. We next see two officers, Lopez and Rubizov, talking obliquely about having Treves killed. Several months later Ada Treves comes to visit Max Friedman in Geneva, and asks him to go to Spain to look for her missing husband. Max had fought with Guido Treves earlier in the international brigades, and reluctantly returns to look for him. Before he leaves, we see his daughter reading The Blue Lotus by Hergé. Friedman checks into a hotel in Barcelona and starts asking about Treves, and soon someone is following him and someone else tries to kill him. Meanwhile it seems like the fascist army knows every move before the Republican army makes it, and the officers suspect a high-level informer. Friedman gets a press pass to visit the front and continue his search.

"Raveneau De Lussan, Gentleman Pirate" / Ruben Moreira. 6
   p. in Real Life Comics, no. 58 (Oct. 1951). -- About a
French pirate in the 17th century (1679-1687). -- Summary
(by Kristine Baclawski): In 1679, French nobleman Raveneau
de Lussan lost his chateau and wealth. He made his way to
the port city Dieppe, where he was forced into becoming a
privateer for Louis XIV of France. Louis' plan was to
disrupt Spanish shipping in the Carribean Sea and Pacific
Ocean. De Lussan was not inclined to be a typical pirate,
and he took only gold and cargo from ships and towns,
avoiding the taking of lives. His reputation as a gentleman
pirate spread widely, enabling his missions to be
profitable without being deadly. With the changing
political climate in France, he was able to turn over his
command and return home, a wealthy but troubled man. Taking
advice from a priest, he put his deeds into a written
confession, Journal of a Voyage as a Buccaneer. -- Call

the Time of Mists, saw the great clans wage decades-long
wars in attempts to seize power. Far from the fields of
battle, Okko the ronin heads a small group of demon
hunters, wandering the realms of Empire. He is accompanied

red mask, and the whimsical monk Noshin, the sake lover
with the power to summon and commune with the spirits of
nature. When Tikku's sister Little Carp is kidnapped by
pirates, the young fisherman enlists the group's help in
