Mr. Pump's Legacy

Mr. Pump's Legacy / by Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper & Michael Turner. -- London : Mammoth, 1990. -- 52 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko) -- (The Stratoship H.22 ; pt. 1) -- Translation of: Le Testament de M. Pump. -- The sequel is Destination New York. -- "Originally created in the nineteen-thirties." -- Call no.: PN6747.H4J6013 1990

Summary: Mr. Pump, an American millionaire obsessed with speed, dies and leaves a 10 million dollar prize to the builders of the first airplane to fly from Paris to New York, or vice versa, non-stop at over 1,000 kilometers per hour. This must be done within one year of the reading of the will, or the money will revert to his nephews William and Fred Stockrise, who otherwise get nothing. In France, Jacques Legrand, the father of Jo and Zette and owner of Jocko, begins working on an aircraft to enter the race. Threats and sabotage begin almost immediately. Mr. Werner, the company's test pilot, frames Legrand as the saboteur and Legrand is arrested. Jo overhears Werner talking on the phone about this, and he tells Zette what he suspects. She follows Werner, and is kidnapped by him and his gang. Zette escapes at the Belgian border and the police bring her back. The police car hits Jocko, but he's not badly hurt and believes it was he who found the missing Zette. The kidnappers are taken into custody but escape from the prison van. Legrand is released and continues work on the stratosphere machine at home. Burglars break in to steal the plans, but are thwarted by Jocko's quick thinking. The plane finally has a test flight and a sabotage attempt nearly succeeds. On the day of the ship's christening, the pilot disappears, and so does Jocko. Searching the airfield for Jocko, Jo and Zette discover another plot to prevent the prize-winning flight. Jo follows one of the gang and learns that they plan to bomb the hangar. Nobody will believe him, so finally he, Zette and Jocko take off in the H.22 just before the bomb hits. They fly all night because they can't land in the dark, and in the morning, out of fuel, just barely glide to safety on the beach of a desert island. (to be continued)
