-- English summary (from p. 143):
"Is there a Fantastical Genre of Comics? Comics are obliged
to be figurative; this does not predispose them to foster
pure fantasy which relies on upheaval of reference points
and certainties. Harry Morgan examines this limitation and
constructs a typology of the fantastical, from EC Comics to
the manga." -- Includes illustrations and bibliographical

Bande Dessinée, no. 10 (Apr. 2004). -- Begins: "Dans Bon
Baisers de New York (éd. Flammarion, 2003), bel album
-- English summary (from p. 126): "Full
Colour: Spiegelman at the New Yorker. By reuniting all the
short strips and especially the numerous covers that he has
given the prestigious New Yorker from 1993 on, Bons Baisers
de New York (Flammarion) reveals another facet of
Spiegelman's work. Harry Morgan praises the pertinence of
these editorial drawings." -- Includes illustrations. --

du Musée de la Bande Dessinée, no. 7 (Jan. 2002). -- (Will
Eisner) -- English summary (from p. 151): "Eisner and the
Graphic Novel. Eisner's second career, which began in 1978
with A Contract with God, bears witness to the development
of his conception of narrative. Harry Morgan, suggesting a
parallel with the way in which Alfred Hitchcock's work
developed, analyses the use of the page as a narrative unit
in Eisner's graphic novels and shows how his conception
defines a style but not a language. He also draws attention
to the fact that this 'social novelist' is at his best when
creating stories with an autobiographical dimension." --

Dessinée, no. 2 (Jan. 1997). -- (Krazy Herriman) -- Begins:
-- English summary
(from p. 137): "The Ethnologist and Krazy Kat. In a brief
study of the celebrated American comic strip Krazy Kat,
Harry Morgan reverts to a conservative point of view of the
author (in this case the cartoonist) as demiurg and the
work (in this case the comic) as a self-contained world. He
boldly asserts that it is perfectly possible to apply the
principles of ethnological inquiry to this fictitious
universe as if it were real, thus emerging with a
consistent, if somewhat puzzling, description of an 'inside
out' world, where art isn't a technological activity
applied to aesthetics, but the very fabric of the world."

summary (from p. 151): "Renaissance: the Daily American
Strip in the 90s. Contrary to common opinion, the daily
strip is not in a period of decline but is undergoing a
veritable rebirth, in parallel to the preoccupations of our
times. Harry Morgan defends this point of view, while

importance." -- English summary (from p. 139): "Gustave
Doré's Tricks. Harry Morgan rereads L'Histoire de la Sainte
Russie and takes a close look at the strategies Doré uses,
and often invents, to obtain comic effect. He highlights
the originality of his contribution to the nascent art of

Bande Dessinée, no. 9 (Oct. 2003). -- Begins: "Changer
-- English summary (from p. 126): "Every Penny Counts :
Barks and the Economy. For Barks the stake of a story is
almost always the success or failure of some financial
venture. Some of his stories propose a real analysis of the
concept of value. Harry Morgan also shows that Uncle
Scrooge, that prototype of the American businessman, is the
descendant of the eccentric millionaires of the youth

Morgana

Morgana / script, Tiziano Sclavi ; art, Angelo Stano ; translation, Violeta Jurkovic ; dialogue, Reed Chaval. -- Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Comics, 1999. -- 96 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. -- (Dylan Dog ; 5) -- (Bonelli Comics) -- Call no.: PN6768.D913 1999 no.5

Summary: Morgana, a young woman, travels on a train from Scotland to London. She is beset by nightmares of death. Morgana is hungry, but when she orders food her attention span is too short to allow her to eat it. She arrives in London and the dreams continue though she seems to be awake. The city appears full of zombies, some of them reading Dylan Dog comic books. Meanwhile, Dylan Dog has received a warning from his friend, the medium Mrs. Trelkowski. He buys a Dylan Dog comic to check out Mrs. Trelkowski's warning, and the story corresponds to the waking dreams that Morgana is experiencing. Morgana rings the bell at Dylan's place, but he's out and she soon forgets why she's there and wanders away to order more food. Dylan gets a more direct message from Mrs. Trelkowski about the comic book: "The horror is there, hidden under the mask of casualness and the absurd!" Dylan hasn't been working, feeling well or dating lately, and suddenly figures out that he's in love without knowing with whom. Morgana rings the doorbell again while Dylan is on his way to Mrs. Treklowski's evening seance. At the seance, he meets Mr. Crandall Reed, the author of the comic book story, who says he wrote it in a trance. Reed then slips into the trance world of the comic book story and gets violent. Dylan shoots him, but he gets right back up and runs away. He falls at the feet of Morgana, who starts to eat him, but quits in horror and runs from the corpse into the street, collapsing where Dylan almost runs her down. Even though she's dead Dylan recognizes her as the object of his crush. Soon they're on the train to Scotland together. She remembers finally why she came to London, which was to return his clarinet. He had left it behind in the first story, Dawn of the Living Dead, after using it to destroy the house and laboratory of Abraxas. When they arrive on the scene (in Undead, Scotland), the zombies that were put back to sleep in Dawn of the Living Dead come alive again, and Morgana takes a bite of Dylan's wrist to express her hunger. We also see the artist, Crandall Reed, at work, and Dylan hears him spill a bottle of ink. After she bites him, Dylan wakes up in bed in London with Morgana. Reassured that it was a nightmare, Dylan goes back to sleep. Morgana gets ready to bite him again, but Felix steps in and shoots her. The artist then spends a page trying to decide what to do next. Dylan and Morgana, back in Scotland, meet with Abraxas. Abraxas had revived her and sent her to get Dylan, because Abraxas needed Dylan's blood to bring himself back to life. At the end, Reed has Abraxas claim Dylan as his son, calling it an "old-fashioned twist."
