The Merry Musketeers

The Merry Musketeers / Willy Vandersteen ; translated by Nicholas J. Lahey and edited by Ronald Parlante. -- San Francisco, Calif. : Hiddigeigei Books, 1976. -- 56 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Willy and Wanda ; 18) -- Originally published in Flemish. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6790.N44W5M4 1976

Summary: Sidonia and Lambik read The Three Musketeers, and get carried way in acting out their ideas of swordplay and gallantry. As a birthday present for Lambik, Sidonia arranges a trip for herself, Lambik, Willy and Wanda in the teletimemachine of Professor Barabas, back to 17th century Paris. They meet a girl named Marie-Angèle, who takes them to the Queen. On the way an old woman gives Lambik a special hat with a little man named Egor in it. They meet the recently-widowed Queen, who with her loyal musketeers is trying to keep Duke Le Sinistair from killing the Dauphin and seizing the throne. The four time travellers enroll as musketeers and leave Paris to get the Dauphin and bring him back for a coronation on his 13th birthday. Warned by a traitoress in the Queen's court (Marie-Angèle), the Duke's Masked Raiders try to stop the friends at an inn, but all 26 are defeated. Next the Duke threatens them with a "secret weapon" in a crate, which turns out to be a very strong man named Jerome. In the encounter with Jerome the four are helped by Egor, by The Man in the Iron Mask, and by Wanda's doll, Sawdust. Jerome wants nothing more than to eat well and play with dolls, and Wanda recruits him for their side. The helpful "Man in the Iron Mask" turns out to be a traitor, and since the heroes understand that the real Man in the Iron Mask is actually the Dauphin, Sidonia, Lambik and Willy continue on to the castle where the Dauphin is supposed to be. There they find Jerome and Wanda, and the Duke arrives with cannons to lay siege. In the castle, a man in a mask is hiding in a chest and won't talk, while Egor says the masked man with the Duke is really the Dauphin. Jerome and Lambik bag the Duke's Man in the Iron Mask and head for Paris, while the Duke opens fire on the castle again, captures the Man in the Iron Mask who's in the box, and also heads for Paris. When all parties are in the presence of the Queen, the bag is opened to reveal Marie-Angèle, and the box is opened to reveal a robot. It turns out she's really a boy and has only been pretending to be duplicitous. Upon that revelation, the Duke tries to kill the boy, but Wanda and Sidonia intervene. The time travelers return to 20th century Flanders, taking Jerome with them.
