Summary: A powerful armed force, with armored elephants and other vehicles, moves across the desert. A man named Markus seems to be in charge, and he has a vicious girlfriend named Pamela. Jeremiah and Kurdy come across an old man whose tractor has broken down in a sandstorm. He is a Bible salesman named Angus Greenspoon. Kurdy fixes the tractor, and the three proceed together to the Sears & Como mine, which has recently been reopened and is hiring workers. At the mine, a government inspector named Wilbur Pierce is concerned that workers are dying and starving, and his reports to the governor are being ignored. Meredith, the boss of the mining operation, says he's a friend of the governor. Greenspoon, Jeremiah and Kurdy arrive at the mine, and Meredith has been expecting Greenspoon. Jeremiah and Kurdy meet a waitress named Olga, and an old friend named Romea who is playing bagpipes on the street to earn money. Romea and Olga are roomates, it turns out, and Romea's partner Julius is hiding in a closet. Julius has accidentally acquired a file of documents proving that the mine has been reopened as a cover for Meredith's search for hundreds of millions of dollars worth of pre-apocalyptic art hidden in a safe somewhere in the tunnels. That night, while Jeremiah has a date with Olga, Kurdy steals Greenspoon's money and knocks him out with a Bible. The next day the miners find the safe, and Meredith sends Greenspoon out into the desert to tell Markus and his army. Jeremiah and Kurdy start to figure out something of what's going on and the two drop back to follow Greenspoon at a distance. Greenspoon reports to Markus that the art has been found in the mine, and the dialogue falls into an Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves motif for a few pages. The thieves are to attack the mine and take the treasure. Jeremiah rides back toward the mine hoping to warn Pierce the government agent, and Kurdy decides it's none of his business. Olga points Pierce out to Jeremiah, and Jeremiah kidnaps him, takes him to Julius, who shows him the file. Pierce orders Meredith arrested, but Meredith has been warned and holes up in a mine gallery with men and lots of ammunition. Pierce and Jeremiah prepare for Markus's army with water in trenches and power cables. The army attacks, the elephants are electrocuted, and Kurdy returns to save Olga from a rapist. There is some suggestion that Kurdy has been concerned about Jeremiah, but Kurdy denies it.

night the woman asks The Mercenary to take her with him and
not back to her husband, but he refuses. He has to protect

Summary: Interview, in which Morris talks about
collaborating with Goscinny. He compares Goscinny's writing
of Lucky Luke to his own, says he hates puns and deletes
them from Goscinny's scripts, but that Goscinny only puts
them in to tease him. Morris says that Hergé's Tintin in
the Land of the Soviets was important to him in choosing
comics as his career. He speaks briefly of censorship,
merchandising, animation, stage adaptation, and film
adaptation of Lucky Luke. La Diligence, he says, is a
parody of the film Stagecoach. Morris describes his way of
depicting motion, and a gangster strip called Fred le
Savant, that he did briefly with Goscinny. Includes two
photographs of Morris, and a sample page of Fred le Savant.
