Margot : Queen of the Night

Margot : Queen of the Night / by Jerome Charyn & Massimo Frezzato ; translated by Fershid Bharucha ; edited by Debra Rabas ; lettered by John Figurski. -- New York : Heavy Metal, 1995. -- 63 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- Call no.: PN6747.C47M38 1995

Summary: Margot and her wrecking crew have set up a free lunch program. She tries to feed and rehouse the people she evicts, and gets the attention of the Monk Foundation. Anjelica Monk tries to get Margo to work for the Foundation, then sends Joe Christmas to seduce Margot to the same end. Monk doesn't really want to fight poverty, though. He wants to tear down a substantial part of Spanish Harlem for a sports palace and housing for the rich. Joe Christmas has some success, but seems to be falling for Margot. Anjelica tries to kill him, but doesn't quite succeed, and he warns Margot. The two women fight on a rooftop, and Anjelica falls. Joe moves away.

Margot in Badtown

Margot in Badtown / Charyn and Frezzato. -- Northampton, MA : Tundra Publishing in association with Comics USA, 1991. -- 52 p. : col. ill. ; 33 cm. -- Note: At the end of this volume there are brief biographies of Charyn and Frezzato, with a photograph of them together. -- Call no.: PN6747.C47M37 1991

Summary: Margot leaves her home in Prairie Dog, Texas, to try her luck as an actress in Manhattan, which most of the characters call "Badtown." Her boyfriend, a local rich kid named Henry Starr, wants her to stay and marry him, but she knows what she wants. In Badtown and alone, Margo goes to acting school and to auditions, and fends off unwanted advances. Before long she comes back to her rented room to find three men, named Everett, Sebastian, and Charles, demolishing everything. They tell her they're a wrecking crew, and their job is to discourage people from living there. They apologize and more or less fix things up. The next day she meets the three again and they give her flowers. A week later the owner of the building, named Volper, hires her to supervise the wrecking crew, all three members of which are his cousins. The men move into Margot's room with her. Soon, on the job, her crew is confronted by a rival crew under a different boss, whose name is Ivan Arbus. She sends Arbus and his men packing. Her reputation for toughness grows, and at the same time she starts protecting innocent people she's supposed to evict. Miles Calendar, a big-time gangster with a private police force, kidnaps both Volper and Margot, planning to take over the business. Henry Starr comes in from Prairie Dog, and under his leadership the crew rescues Margot. She invites Henry to stay, and Henry joins the crew, which is now working for Ivan Arbus. Arbus wants her to expand her responsibilities, and when she refuses he sends another crew. After a confrontation, Margo resigns from Arbus' employ by wrecking his office.

"Prologue : Eloise and Josepha, Scenes of Their Provincial Life" p. 9-18 -- Summary: Josepha skips church and debauches her nephew. Heloise, her sister-in-law, decides to send her to the Convent of Ste. Madeleine de la Redemption, then changes her mind and begins her punishment at home. Germain the valet ties her up and beats her and otherwise humiliates her as though she were his own wife. Since Josepha's moral framework is the same as Germain's, Josepha is in philosophical accord with the proceedings. Then Josepha breaks a vase, and Heloise has her whipped so hard that Heloise faints, and soon dies. As her last instruction, Heloise orders that Josepha be put out of the house with only a shirt. Josepha finds miserable work in a coal mine, but still counts herself fortunate not to be locked in the Redemption, where her friend Marie-Gabrielle suffered for years.

"This is a Tale About the Reclusion and Torments Endured by Marie-Gabrielle..." p. 19-141 -- Summary: The Convent of Ste. Madeleine de la Redemption is in a remote valley, where the sisters occupy themselves in the punishment of women. It is actually a women's prison, and though it has no official or legal standing it operates with the approval of both secular and ecclesiastical authorities. A system of denunciation, including anonymous denunciation, supplies the prisoners, about sixty at a time. The crimes committed are such things as missing church, eating meat on Friday, or being raped by the boss. Husbands commonly send wives there. Occasionally one of the nuns seems either too enthusiastic or too lenient while punishing the prisoners, and will be stripped naked and beaten for a period of years. The punishments include every kind of sadism: body piercing, hard labor, starvation, sleep deprivation, nudity and immobility for long periods of time, and public humiliation in nearby villages (done for fund-raising purposes). Marie-Gabrielle is a wealthy countess as the story begins, and has caught the eye of her priest. Since she seems attractive to him, he considers that she needs punishment. The priest arranges for Marie-Gabrielle and her husband to visit the Convent, and to accept into their home a woman who has finished her sentence there. During the visit Marie-Gabrielle seems to like the place, and even volunteers to do some whipping. Her husband thinks the place is ghastly. Soon Marie-Gabrielle is tricked by her confessor and her new servant into a relationship with a young officer, Octave de Paulnay. The husband breaks in upon them, she picks up a pistol to shoot the husband, and Octave gets in the way and gets shot. Marie-Gabrielle is transported to the Convent on her husband's orders. After fifteen years her sentence is over, and her confessor returns to hear her confession. He says her confession is incomplete, no absolution, and Marie-Gabrielle finally starts thinking there is some injustice here. She is sold as a slave to be transported to the brothels of Vera Cruz. The first mate helps her escape once they get to Mexico, and she lives with rag pickers for awhile, then joins the brothel anyhow. Soon a man named Octave buys her for the day and it turns out he's the man she shot back in France. They become a happy couple.
