Mansions of the Gods

The Mansions of the Gods / text by Goscinny ; drawings by Uderzo ; translated by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. -- Montréal : Dargaud Canada, 1981. -- 47 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- (An Asterix Adventure) -- Translation of: Le Domaine des Dieux. -- Call no.: PN6747.U3A8713 1981

Summary: Caesar comes up with a new plan to reduce the irreductible Gauls. He plans to raze the forest around their village and put up a community of apartment buildings, stores, stadia, etc. Closely surrounded by civilization, the theory goes, the barbarian Gauls will inevitably adapt. The development is to be called "The Mansions of the Gods." An architect is hired, and soon Asterix and Obelix find him measuring things in their forest. Dogmatix, Obelix's dog, is particularly protective of the trees and attacks when the architect marks them. The architect is not discouraged by his first few encounters, though he requires medical attention. Slaves are brought in to begin cutting the trees. The Roman soldiers make them do it at night and quietly at first, so as not to arouse the wrath of the Gauls. The Gauls are thus mystified by the missing trees, and replant them with magic acorns each morning. This byplay ends when Asterix gets the idea of giving the slaves some magic potion so they can revolt. Instead of revolting, however, the slaves form a union, bargain for wages, and begin clearing the forest much more efficiently. As a side effect, the Legionnaires also form a bargaining unit and start negotiating with their officers. The slaves ask the Gauls to stop interfering with the work, and soon the first block of apartments is occupied. The Roman shoppers discover the quaint and inexpensive Gaulish shops, and the economy of the village is disrupted. The fishmonger makes a killing, and the blacksmith turns out antiques at a great rate. Other Gauls open shops, and soon the competition has the villagers at each other's throats. Something has to be done, so Asterix and Obelix put a plan in motion. By imitating Dogmatix in an angry mood, Obelix scares a Roman tenant out of his apartment. Asterix rents the apartment for Cacofonix, the Gaulish bard. After one night of music, all the Roman civilians pack up and head back to Rome. As a point in the labor negotiations, the Roman army then requisitions the building for a barracks and kicks Cacofonix out. When the Gauls hear that one of their own has been treated thus, they attack the building and tear it down. The soldiers decide they'd rather go back to their tents, and the architect decides to go to Egypt and build pyramids. The Gauls plant some magic acorns, and in a few hours the forest is back with only a few Roman ruins to show that the Mansions of the Gods ever existed.
