Love Shots

Love Shots / stories by Philippe Paringaux ; illustrated by Jacques de Loustal ; translated by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1988. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- Translation of: Clichés d'Amour. -- Call no.: PN6747.C5513 1988

"Love is a Green Plant" p. 3-8 -- Summary: A gigolo/pool attendant sees a couple of guests arrive for a week, and is struck with a crush on the guy. After a few days the man gives him a room number, and he goes, not knowing what to expect. Unhappily for him, it's the woman who wants his services.

"The White Woman" p. 10-17 -- Summary: Eddie Jones, a black boxer from Detroit, is in Atlanta for a fight with Dave Pillard, the "great white hope of the South." A woman at ringside gives him the eye, and inspires his fighting. Then she gives him her hotel room number. Somebody trashes Eddie's car. When Eddie wakes up, the woman is dead and the Ku-Klux Klan has the hotel surrounded.

"The Sand Man" p. 19-24 -- Summary: He lives in a deserted town, blown full of sand, and hides when the ambulance comes. He remembers his sons Antoine and Lucien. He hides in the factory where he used to be the supervisor, and play with his sons. Nobody knows the place like he does. The men from the ambulance find him, and introduce themselves, speaking mechanically, as Antoine and Lucien. They have big scar lines across their bald heads.

"The Ballad of Louise" p. 26-34 -- Summary: The story of a girl from a "plains state" who goes to Los Angeles, suffers every kind of insult and relationship and becomes a movie star, then loses her looks and slits her wrists. Told in rhyming quatrain captions.

"New Mexico" p. 37-42 -- Summary: A brother and sister steal their eleventh car, stop at a remote truck stop, and murder the waitress, Millie Bent. It is the last in a long series of murders by Caroline and James French. The story is told in half-page captioned panels, in which the waitress and a customer are the only persons seen, and then only in three of the twelve panels.

"Night of the Alligator" p. 45-62 -- Summary: A mob doctor lives in a cabin on the beach in Florida. Most of his customers come for abortions, but he used to patch up gunshot wounds in Chicago. This night in a hurricane, a man with a bullet wound arrives, with a bodyguard/chauffeur and a woman. Doc patches up the man, and hides him while he heals. The woman reminds Doc persistently of his daughter Daisy, who left him after he abused her the day of her mother's funeral. Her name is Clara, and the bodyguard's name is Butch. Butch is grouchy and won't let Doc play his saxophone. Doc goes to a town to visit a prostitute, and some killers follow him back. Butch ties the killers together and hangs them all night over a swamp full of alligators, and the next day takes the Doc with him while he cuts the rope and lets the alligators have them. Doc sees Butch and Clara making love in his house, then drives to a black club in town and plays his saxophone. He gets obnoxious and gets thrown out. When Doc gets back to his cabin the next morning the patient is dead, with his throat slit and his fingers cut off. In the blood on the floor, a word is written: "Daisy."
