El Lobo.
   "The Scarecrow" 10 p. in Zorro in Old California / by

   Eclipse Books, 1986). -- Summary: An Indian farmer's
   scarecrow is fashioned to look like Captain Monastario, and
   the Captain flies into a rage and prepares to whip him.
   Zorro steps in and frees the man. Commandante Sanchez, a
   special envoy from the Governor, witnesses the incompetent
   pursuit of Zorro by the soldiers. Visiting the Captain, the
   Commandante says the Governor has sent him to collect the
   taxes that haven't been paid. The Captain has the money, so
   Commandante Sanchez says he plans to take it to the
   Governor in the morning. That night, Captain Monastario
   frees a prisoner, named El Lobo, on the condition that he
   masquerade as Zorro and steal the money. El Lobo is
   successful, but Monastario has planned to capture him. The
   only way for El Lobo to escape is to cross Los Indios
   Bridge, a rickety construction of ropes and uneven planks.
   Zorro confronts him on the bridge, but Monastario kills El
   Lobo with a gunshot. Zorro now has the money, so two
   soldiers go out on the bridge to get him. Zorro cuts the
   ropes, and the soldiers and the money all fall into the

   is a Union soldier who goes west after the Civil War ends.
   He hires as a ranch hand and gets wrongly blamed for
   killing the boss. He sets out to clear his name with good
   deeds. He saves a miner's life and the miner gives him his
   gold mine. The character is unnamed, and is called Lobo the
   lone wolf by his enemies. To mark his deeds he leaves
   behind gold coins with a wolf and the letter "L" on them.
   Race is not mentioned in the story and people do not react
