Summary: Shalby, a prisoner in the Utah Penitentiary, is offered his freedom in return for participation in a medical experiment. Before the experiment is over, a former experimental subject offers to help him escape and asks him to tell the world what's happening. Shalby isn't clear on what's going on, but the opportunity to escape is real and he takes it. He's badly injured by the medical procedures and a police manhunt is in full cry, when a woman doctor hides him and nurses him to health. For her trouble, he rapes her. Shalby makes his way to Labrador, getting smuggled in by a pilot who remembers dropping him in the same place four years earlier. Shalby denies this, but soon finds himself in a kind of remote scientific camp that seems familiar, peopled only by a corpse named Mark Amselstein. Amselstein was from Hamburg, Germany, and his passport has Shalby's picture on it. Soon armed men come looking for him, so Shalby takes all of Amselsteins diaries and notes, and his passport, and heads for Germany. Shalby starts to have disorienting visions.
