Summary: James Bird is old and will soon die, but he says this will be his second death and starts to reminisce about the first time. As a young Black man in the state of Mississippi in 1965, James Bird is arrested by the white supremacist Sheriff Metzger for using a "whites only" restroom. Metzger drives Bird to a remote bridge, intending to kill him, but Bird jumps the sheriff and they fall off the bridge together, locked in struggle. When they surface, the landscape has changed radically. They have gone to a sort of limbo called "Lazarr," where people who have died in antagonistic pairs must spend eternity in each other's close proximity. This of course is not a pleasing prospect for either man. Metzger still has his revolver, which he called "Lee Harvey," and in this world it has special properties. They soon meet Abel, who with his brother Cain was a founding resident of Lazarr. They learn that Lee Harvey is the long foretold "Black Grail," the artifact that can bring death to this world of people already dead. Cain steals Lee Harvey, and plans to kill Abel with it. This will upset the balance and allow Cain and his hordes to re-enter the world of the living. Bird and Metzger accept the task of recovering the Grail, which they do, and Abel shoots himself with it. This imprisons Cain forever in Lazarr. Then Bird shoots Metzer with it, and is transported back to Mississippi. At the end old man Bird puts Lee Harvey on Metzger's gravestone, which is inscribed "missing in action."
