   v. 2, no. 6 (Junio 2002).
-- Summary: As of the beginning of the 21st century,
graphic storytelling has gained a place in literature.
Telling stories with complementary images and text is
established as a real art. However, this form isn't getting
appropriate attention in all countries, in this case Chile.
There this craft has developed slowly but constantly during
the 20th century, very influenced by the European style in
the beginning, the North American style since the fifties,
and the Japanese way in recent years, all subject to then
current technical developments. To understand the Chilean
non-presence in the world's history of comic books, it must
be said: There are few serious works about the history of
Chilean comic books; those books or essays only name a few
authors and titles; they appear rarely ; and only a few can
get their hands on these historic appreciations. This
research aims to rescue and recover this patrimony, and
show the world the Chilean idiom in ink and paper. So, hang
on because the time trip is beginning!" -- Abstracts as

Manuel Barrero. p. 93-104 in Revista Latinoamericana de
   Estudios sobre la Historieta, v. 2, no. 6 (Junio 2002). --
llave: Salinas, Hora Cero, Oesterheld, Mixerix, Breccia,
-- Summary: It's been said
that the comic for mature audiences was born in Europe: in
France, the UK, Italy- but we think that the comic books
and the authors in the forties and fifties in Latin
American countries were a very important part of this
history. And, perhaps, the Argentine series, creations,
storytelling innovations and improvements were the key:
Salinas, Hora Cero, Oesterheld, Misterix, Breccia, Humor
Registrado, Solano López, LD. Despite all this creativity,
Argentina has had (and still has) a difficult political
history, and because of that many of the best comic writers
and artists had to emigrate. Here is a reflection on them.

"La Novela Gráfica como una Opción Sustentable para la
Industria de Historietas de Países en Desarrollo : El Caso
del Artist Brasileño Lourenço Mutarelli" / Waldomiro
Vergueiro, Lucimar Ribeiro Mutarelli. p. 105-113 in Revista
-- Summary: "Since Will Eisner's A Contract with God, the
comics market has seen the development of graphic novels as
a new and alternative format for publication. However, in
developing countries, due to economic and market
constraints, local artists have not always preferred
graphic novels as a medium for disseminating their work.
Foreign graphic novels can be seen quite often in
developing countries, but few native artists have really
tried to produce them. In Brazil, for instance, the artists
still prefer to create comic strips or stories for comic
books. Most of the Brazilian graphic novels are still
published outside of the commercial market, using the
alternative channels for production and distribution common
to underground comics and fanzines. Considering these
circumstances, the authors propose that the graphic novel
can be a viable option for the production of the artists of
developing countries. The Brazilian comics market, and the
career of Lourenço Mutarelli, one of its most distinguished
artists, are also analysed." -- Abstracts as printed with
