Un Marron / Denis Vierge ; preface by Anne-Laure Dijoux. --
   Saint-Denis : Bulles dans l'Océan, 2014-2016. -- col. ill.
   ; 32 cm. -- Complete in 2 vols. -- Contents: 1. Caf' la bou
; 2. Louise.
barbare qui l'a déshumanisé."--Livre premier, back cover.
humain."--Livre second, back cover. -- Historical adventure
genre, about fugitive slaves on Réunion. -- LIBRARY HAS: v.
   1-2. -- Call no.: PN6747.V474M3 2014

quite friends. But when they're sent back to just before
they got their spider-powers, Spider-Man and Silk have no
option but to put all that behind them. Can they let
bygones be bygones, stop a sinister threat to reality as
they knew it, and avoid accidentally wiping out the moment
that gave them their amazing abilities? Maybe these two
anachronistic arachnids could enlist some aid from a local

   Moyen-Orient (1978-1984) ; t. 2 (1984-1985) ; t. 3
(1985-1987). -- Summary (from SkyRiver): Né d'un père
-- Autobiographical genre. --

The Arab of the Future : a Graphic Memoir : a Childhood in the

Taylor. -- New York : Metropolitan Books, Henry Holt and
   Company, LLC, 2015. -- 153 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 24 cm.
-- Translation from the French of: L'Arabe du futur. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "In striking, virtuoso
graphic style that captures both the immediacy of childhood
and the fervor of political idealism, Riad Sattouf recounts
his nomadic childhood growing up in rural France, Gaddafi's
Libya, and Assad's Syria--but always under the roof of his
father, a Syrian Pan-Arabist who drags his family along in
his pursuit of grandiose dreams for the Arab nation. Riad,
delicate and wide-eyed, follows in the trail of his
mismatched parents; his mother, a bookish French student,
is as modest as his father is flamboyant. Venturing first
to the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab State and then
joining the family tribe in Homs, Syria, they hold fast to
the vision of the paradise that always lies just around the
corner. And hold they do, though food is scarce, children
kill dogs for sport, and with locks banned, the Sattoufs
come home one day to discover another family occupying
their apartment. The ultimate outsider, Riad, with his
flowing blond hair, is called the ultimate insult: Jewish.
And in no time at all, his father has come up with yet
another grand plan, moving from building a new people to
building his own great palace. Brimming with life and dark
humor, The Arab of the Future reveals the truth and texture
of one eccentric family in an absurd Middle East, and also
introduces a master cartoonist in a work destined to stand
alongside Maus and Persepolis." -- Autobiographical genre.

The Arab of the Future 2 : a Graphic Memoir : a Childhood in

Sam Taylor. -- New York : Metropolitan Books ; Henry Holt &
   Company, 2016. -- 154 p. : col. ill. ; 24 cm. -- Summary
(from OCLC): Riad has settled in his father's hometown of
Horms and gets to go to school, where he dedicates himself
to becoming a true Syrian in the country of the dictator
Hafez Al-Assad. Told simply yet with devastating effect,
Riad's story takes in the sweep of politics, religion, and
poverty, but is steered by acutely observed small moments:
the daily sadism of his schoolteacher, the lure of the
black market, with its menu of shame and subsistence, and
the obsequiousness of his father in the company of those
close to the regime. As the family strains to fit in, one
chilling, barbaric act drives the Sattoufs to make the most
dramatic of changes. -- Translation from the French of:

cartoonist Fred Hembeck has been poking fun at Marvel's
mightiest heroes. Now, some of his greatest works are
   collected in a giant-sized one-shot that's bursting with
belly laughs! Fred relentlessly roasts the Fantastic Four
with the help of an all-star cast of artists, then wipes
out the Marvel Universe in the tale they said couldn't be
published (and almost wasn't)! Even Spider-Man and the Hulk
are no match for Hembeck's trademark wit! Also featuring a
cornucopia of side-splitting short strips from the pages of

African country of Sierra Leone was a gruesome war zone.
Over 15,000 rebels roamed the countryside raping, pillaging
and brutally murdering everyone in their path. The
under-trained and unmotivated Sierra Leone Army was
powerless to stop them. As the rebels advanced towards the
country's capital, the world held its collective breath.
Genocide was imminent. In a desperate attempt to save
hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, the government
hired the infamous private military company, Executive
Outcomes, to quell the tide of blood. Cobus Claassens and
his team of 150 mercenaries fought a brutal battle against
butchery in Africa and unwittingly faced a foe they were
far less prepared for: the manipulations of back room

Al Plastino : Last Superman Standing / Eddy Zeno. -- Raleigh,
   NC : TwoMorrows Publishing, 2016. -- 111 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.
-- "An illustrated biography." -- Summary (from OCLC): With
a comics career dating back to 1941, including inking early
issues of Captain America, Al Plastino was one of the last
surviving penciler/inkers of his era. Laboring uncredited
on Superman for two decades (1948-1968), he co-created
Supergirl, Brainiac, and the Legion of Super-Heroes,
drawing those characters' first appearances, and
illustrating the initial comics story to feature
Kryptonite. He was called upon to help maintain the DC
Comics house-style by redrawing other artists' Superman
heads, most notoriously on Jack Kirby's Jimmy Olsen series,
much to his chagrin. His career even included working on
classic daily and Sunday newspaper strips like Nancy, Joe
Palooka, Batman, and others. With a foreword by Paul
Levitz, this book (by Eddy Zeno, author of Curt Swan: A
Life In Comics) was completed just weeks before Als recent
passing. In these pages, the artist remembers both his
struggles and triumphs in the world of comics, cartooning
and beyond. A near-century of insights shared by Al, his
family, and contemporaries Allen Bellman, Nick Cardy, Joe
Giella, and Carmine Infantino--along with successors Jon
Bogdanove, Jerry Ordway, and Mark Waid--paint a layered
portrait of Plastino's life and career. And a wealth of
illustrations show just how influential a figure he is in
the history of comics. -- Call no.: PN6727.P5235Z5 2016
