Le Nouveau Western de Jijé à Blanc-Dumont. -- Bruxelles : P.
   Briou, 1981. -- 32 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- Edited by
Jean-Michel Briou. -- Summary: Briou says the new western
reflects the modern approach to society, i.e., mirrors a
collective conscience that is post-colonial. This is a
collection of five short essays. Briou's first essay is a
survey, in which he calls Buddy Longway the first
"ecological" western. The second essay discusses
stereotypes, women characters and racism, points out that
there are few real workers in westerns, and that westerns
reflect the social attitudes of the time they were created,
not the times the supposedly depict. The third essay is
signed "Anne-Isabelle Petit & M.D.B.," and is about Native
American characters in Lucky Luke. The fourth is by
Laurence Harlé, and is about women characters in westerns.
The fifth, unsigned, is about the series Comancehe, which
features a woman as the title character. -- Photocopy of

City of Clowns / Daniel Alarcón, Sheila Alvarado. -- New York
   : Riverhead Books, 2015. -- 138 p. : ill. ; 24 cm --
Translated from the Spanish of Ciudad de Payasos. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): Oscar "Chino" Uribe is a
young Peruvian journalist for a local tabloid paper. After
the recent death of his philandering father, he must
confront the idea of his father's other family, and how
much of his own identity has been shaped by his father's
murky morals. At the same time, he begins to chronicle the
life of street clowns, sad characters who populate the
violent and corrupt city streets of Lima, and is drawn into
their haunting, fantastical world. This remarkably
affecting story by Daniel Alarcon was included in his
acclaimed first book, War by Candlelight, and now, in
collaboration with artist Sheila Alvarado, it takes on a
new, thrilling form. This graphic novel, with its short
punches of action and images, its stark contrasts between
light and dark, truth and fiction, perfectly corresponds to
the tone of Chino's story. With the city of Lima as a
character, and the bold visual language from the story,
City of Clowns is moving, menacing, and brilliantly vivid."

Koko Be Good / Jen Wang. -- New York : First Second, 2010. --
   299 p. : col. ill. ; 22 cm. -- Summary (from publisher via
OCLC): "Koko's always got a new project cooking, even
though they usually end in total disaster. This time will
be different, Koko promises herself. This time, she's
decided to Be Good. But how can a girl whose greatest
talent is causing trouble get her act cleaned up? If she's
being honest with herself, Koko isn't even sure what 'being
good' means. Jon knows what being good means, and that's
why he's going to Peru to support his girlfriend's
humanitarian mission. That's good, all right, but is it
what he wants? Jon has a promising future as a musician. Is
he ready to give that up--maybe forever? Two very different
people, both struggling for direction, find their way into
each other's lives in Jen Wang's first graphic novel.
Honest, wrenching, and incredibly funny, Koko Be Good is a
tour-de-force debut about human nature and the inhuman
efforts we make to find ourselves." -- Alternative genre.

The Story of My Tits / Jennifer Hayden. -- Marietta, GA : Top
   Shelf Productions, 2015. -- 344 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "When Jennifer Hayden
was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43, she
realized that her tits told a story. Across a lifetime,
they'd held so many meanings: hope and fear, pride and
embarrassment, life and death. And then they were gone.
Now, their story has become a way of understanding her
story: a journey from the innocence of youth to the chaos
of adulthood, through her mother's mastectomy, her father's
mistress, her husband's music, and the endlessly evolving

(from OCLC): Using Rand's biography to illuminate the
policies that led to the economic crash in the U.S. and in
Europe and the global financial crisis of 2008, Cunningham
shows how her philosophy continues to affect today's
politics and policies, starting with her most noted
disciple, economist Alan Greenspan (former chairman of the
Federal Reserve). Cunningham also shows how right-wing
conservatives, libertarians, and the Tea Party movement

Dante's Divine Comedy / adapted by Seymour Chwast. - New York
   : Bloomsbury, 2010. -- 127 p. : ill. ; 29 cm. -- Contents:
Inferno ; Purgatory ; Paradise. -- Summary (from OCLC): In
this Seymour Chwast's version of Dante Alighieri's epic
poem, Dante and his guide Virgil don fedoras and wander
through noirish realms of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise.
Along the way they catalog a multitude of sinners and
saints--many of them real people to whom Dante tellingly
assigned either horrible punishment or indescribable
pleasure--and meet both God and Lucifer face-to-face.
Chwast creates a visual fantasia that fascinates on every
page. His inventive illustrations capture the delirious
complexity of this classic of the western canon. --

Pappa in Doubt / Anton Kannemeyer. -- Auckland Park : Jacana
   Media, 2015. -- 91 p. : col. ill. ; 29 cm. -- Summary (from
amazon.com via OCLC): With Pappa in doubt, Anton Kannemeyer
returns to the fertile land that he explored to brilliant
satiric effect in Pappa in Afrika (2010). Once again
parodying Herge's Tintin in the Congo (1931), Kannemeyer
exposes the contradictions and paradoxes of life in the
postcolony. The artist is as provocative as he is playful,
and does not spare himself the relentless, humorous
scrutiny to which he subjects politicians, despots and his
neighbours in the leafy suburbs. In addition to drawings,
paintings and prints, the book features extended comics in
which Kannemeyer traces the dawning of his political
consciousness as a young white Afrikaans-speaking South
African, whose life is entwined with the joys and realities
of Africa. His comics and other singular images also
confront and reflect on the racism embedded in language and
the physical and mental violence ingrained in the deeply
divided society in which he lives. -- Political genre
