-- Call no.: folio PN6745.L3D5 2013

"El Pitirre" (Humor Revolucionario (2)) / Javier Negrín. p.
1-36 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 4, no. 13 (Marzo 2004).
Abstract: "The weekly El Pitirre (1960-1961) brought
together an important sector of avant-garde graphic humor
in Cuba. Famous caricaturists like René de la Nuez, Chago
Armada, José Luis Posada and Rafael Fornés appeared on its

was sharply curtailed by its disappearance, partly because

entonces." -- Abstract: "The efforts of Victor Patricio de
Landaluze (a.k.a Bayaceto, a.k.a. Don Junipero) in the
satiric magazines of 19th century Spanish Cuba stand out
from the rest in the contemporary illustrated press. He was
a pioneer in forging new forms and a new medium with his
caricatures and cartoons. He presented the first sequences
of images that could be considered comics. These primitive
comics of Bayaceto, from 1857, were satirical but they also
tried to present urban romantic adventures, and to make
theater and opera easier for people. These comics helped
develop inconographic patterns for identification with
different Cuban social roles." -- Abstracts as published

new breed of Chilean comic books came from university
people who wanted to shock the establisment. Their
bittersweet fanzines became mainstream comic books that
brought terror campaign against them. This new big bang is

Summary (from OCLC): Set several years after the events of
Django Unchained, Django again pursues evil men in his role
as a bounty hunter. Taking to the roads of the American
Southwest, he encounters the aged and sophisticated Diego
de la Vega. Django is fascinated by this unusual character,
the first wealthy white man he's met who seems totally
unconcerned with the color of his skin, and who can hold
his own in a fight. Django hires on as Diego's bodyguard,
and is soon drawn into a fight to free the local indigenous
people from brutal servitude. Learning much from the older
man, he discovers that slavery isn't exclusive to his
people, as he even dons the mask of Zorro in their mission
of mercy! -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6777.P58D53 2015

On the Origin of Superheroes : from the Big Bang to Action
Comics no. 1 / Chris Gavaler. -- Iowa City : University of
   Iowa Press, 2015. -- 295 p. : ill. ; 23 cm -- Summary (from
publisher via OCLC): "Most readers think that superheroes
began with Superman in 1938, but that Kryptonian rocket
didn't just drop out of the sky. By the time Superman's
creators were born, the superhero's most defining
   elements--secret identities, aliases, disguises, signature
symbols, traumatic origin stories, extraordinary powers,
   self-sacrificing altruism--were already well-rehearsed
standards. Superheroes have a sprawling, action-packed
history that predates Superman by decades and even
centuries. On the Origin of Superheroes is a quirky,
personal tour of the mythology, literature, philosophy,
history, and grand swirl of ideas that have permeated
western culture in the centuries that led up to the first
appearance of superheroes as we know them today: Superman's
appearance in Action Comics, no. 1 in 1938." -- Includes

Unflattening / Nick Sousanis. -- Cambridge, Massachusetts :
   Harvard University Press, 2015. -- 193 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.
   -- Includes bibliographical references (pages 171-189). --
Summary (from amazon via OCLC): "The primacy of words over
images has deep roots in Western culture. But what if the
two are inextricably linked, equal partners in
meaning-making? Written and drawn entirely as comics,
Unflattening is an experiment in visual thinking. Nick
Sousanis defies conventional forms of scholarly discourse
to offer readers both a stunning work of graphic art and a
serious inquiry into the ways humans construct knowledge.
'Unflattening' is an insurrection against the fixed
viewpoint. Weaving together diverse ways of seeing drawn
from science, philosophy, art, literature, and mythology,
it uses the collage-like capacity of comics to show that
perception is always an active process of incorporating and
reevaluating different vantage points. While its vibrant,
constantly morphing images occasionally serve as
illustrations of text, they more often connect in nonlinear
fashion to other visual references throughout the book.
They become allusions, allegories, and motifs, pitting
realism against abstraction and making us aware that more
meets the eye than is presented on the page." --

The Superhero Costume : Identity and Disguise in Fact and
Fiction / Barbara Brownie and Danny Graydon. -- London :
   Bloomsbury Academic, 2016. -- 175 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. --
Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "Costume defines the
superhero, disguising and distinguishing them from his or
her civilian alter-ego. Instantly recognizable, the often
garish garb includes insignias which are frequently
appropriated and distorted throughout the world in a
variety of media. This book provides the first inter
disciplinary analysis of the superhero costume and
investigates wide-ranging issues such as identity,
otherness, ritual dress and disguise. Analysis focuses on
the implications of wearing superhero costume, exploring
interpretations of the costumed hero and the extent to
which the costume defines his or her role. Using examples
across various media (comic books, film, and television)
with case studies including The X-Men, Watchmen, real-life
superheroes such as Phoenix Jones and Pussy Riot and
audience activities such as cosplay, The Superhero Costume
presents new perspectives on the increasingly popular
genre. A lively and thorough account of superhero fashions
throughout history, The Superhero Costume will be essential
reading for undergraduate students of fashion, visual
culture, popular culture and cultural studies." -- Includes
