Summary: Lieutenant Graig is traveling west to Fort
Navajo in a Wells Fargo stagecoach. It's his first
assignment out of West Point, though he's from a military
family: his father is a general. The stage pulls in for an
hour's stop at the town of Palomito, and Graig goes into
Big Sam's saloon. A high stakes poker game is going on, and
Graig is just in time to take the part of a man three
others have accused of cheating. The day is won, and the
man collects his hatful of money. He offers Graig a drink.
The bar does not serve lemonade, iced tea, ginger beer,
milk, etc., so Graig chokes down some liquor. The winning
gambler introduces himself as Mike S. Blueberry, also a
lieutenant on route to assignment at Fort Navajo. He
travels out of uniform so he can cheat at poker along the
way to raise money. Graig is aghast and very disapproving.
Blueberry is basically being banished to Fort Navajo by the
army for various kinds of misconduct, but his service
throughout the recent Civil War was distinguished. He is a
Southerner, but he fought for the North, enlisting with the
Nebraska volunteers. Blueberry now has enough money to buy
a horse, so he sets out for Fort Navajo alone. The
stagecoach leaves with two new passengers, the sister and
daughter of the fort's commanding officer, Colonel Dickson.
Before they get very far Blueberry joins the stage because
his horse has broken a leg and had to be shot. When the
coach get to Phil Stanton's ranch, the place is in flames
and all the people and cattle are dead, except Stanton
himself who lingers just long enough to say that Indians
have taken his 10-year-old son, Jim. Graig promises to ride
after the boy right away. There is evidence at the site
that the 20 or 30 Indians involved were Apaches. All the
experienced westerners try to tell Graig that riding after
the Indians alone is foolish. The upshot is that Graig
takes one of the coach's horses to follow the Indians, and
Blueberry takes another one to follow Graig. The stage
continues to Fort Navajo with two horses. Graig is soon
spotted by an Indian lookout, and the Indians set up an
ambush for him the next morning in a narrow canyon.
Blueberry hears the shots and comes running. He uses his
army bugle to sound a charge in an echoing canyon, and
frightens the Indians away long enough to get Graig up
behind him on the horse. Graig's horse has been killed. The
Indians catch on quickly and give chase. Blueberry ties a
dead cactus to his horse on a long rope and sends it away
making a cloud of dust while the two lieutenants hide
beside their trail. They catch the last Indian, appropriate
his horse, and head for Fort Navajo. By now Graig
appreciates Blueberry's style and experience a lot more.
After several hours they meet a detachment of bluecoats,
commanded by a Major Bascom, that has been sent out to look
for them. Bascom wants to chase the Indians and exterminate
them right away, but he is reminded by a Lieutenant Crowe
that his orders are not to pursue the Indians after Graig
and Blueberry have been found. Crowe is half Indian, and
Bascom resents this as much as he resents being reminded of
his duty by an inferior officer. Some hours later an Indian
advance scout returns to the column to report a group of
Apaches on the move ahead. Bascom won't be dissuaded, and
gives the order to attack. It is a whole village of
innocents moving their camp, with many women and children.
In the confusion and shooting, Blueberry sounds "Retreat"
on his bugle, and Graig backs him up. Most of the Indians
are saved, but several are killed including their chief,
Gray Wolf. Blueberry is in trouble with Bascom for his
musical offering, and Blueberry's excuse is that he meant
to sound "Charge" and sounded "Retreat" by mistake. The
soldiers laugh, but the Major orders Blueberry executed
immediately. Graig takes the Major aside and explains the
legal situation, that the Major has been reminded of his
orders and has disobeyed them. Bascom changes the
punishment to 20 days' arrest at the fort. Lt. Crow tells
Blueberry and Graig that it wasn't Apaches that attacked
the farm, but probably a band of renegades from Mexico who
left an Apache arrow and feather behind to shift the blame.
Although the Apaches under Chief Cochise have long honored
a peace treaty with the whites, the attack by Bascom has
changed things. That night Colonel Dickson receives a
message signed by Cochise himself, offering to come to Fort
Navajo and talk it over. Dickson promises Cochise and this
chiefs safe conduct by flying a white flag over the fort,
though Bascom is extremely hostile to the idea of having
Cochise so close and not killing or capturing him. Before
the meeting can take place, Dickson is bitten by a
rattlesnake. Blueberry knows how to suck out the venom, but
still Dickson will be in a fever for several days and
Bascom is in charge. Bascom's plan is to capture all the
chiefs, and he does capture all of them except Cochise, who
slits the meeting tent and gets away wounded. This provokes
an attack on the fort by 100 or so Apaches, which is soon
broken off. A general Apache uprising seems to be building.
One messenger sent out by Bascom comes back wounded, and
another comes back dead of arrows.

Summary: Warriors of all the Apache tribes are
gathering to the call of Cochise: Navajos, Mescaleros,
Acomas, Zunis and Tontos. Fort Navajo is completely cut off
from the rest of the world. Both sides now have hostages,
and the situation is grim. Cochise sends one of his
prisoners, a miner named Bubble Nose, to the fort with an
offer to let the people leave the fort in exchange for the
release of the captive chiefs. Major Bascom rejects the
offer out of hand, though his officers think it is worth
considering. Bascom responds to Cochise's offer by
releasing his youngest prisoner with a demand for
unconditional surrender, saying he's going to hang the
oldest prisoner from the wall of the fort at dawn to prove
he is serious. Meanwhile the true commander of the fort is
in a coma and getting worse. There is a serum in Tucson
that would help. Blueberry volunteers to try sneaking
through the enemy lines to get the serum. Before Blueberry
can leave, Lt. Crowe, the half-Indian soldier, releases the
prisoners. Blueberry makes it through the Indian lines
using an exploding carriage as a diversion. The first night
on the trail he accidentally camps at a spot where the
tribes gather top plan an attack on Tucson. The Indians
almost catch him there, but he escapes and redoubles his
determination to get to Tucson, this time to warn the city
as well as to get the serum. After a difficult desert
crossing which kills his horse named Gringo, Blueberry
makes it to the Río Santa Cruz and then to the Diamond
ranch two miles further. The ranch is occupied by Mexican
outlaws who capture Blueberrry and save him as a present
for the Indians. The Mexicans are selling alcohol, arms and
ammunition to Chato of the Navajos. The men are named
Manuel, Joaquin, and Pablo. Blueberry tricks Joaquin with a
cigarette and escapes, burning their wagonload of
ammunition and alcohol as he leaves, and chasing away their
mules. Tucson is deserted Blueberry arrives. The people
have already been warned and have evacuated, except for one
old farmer. Blueberry finds the serum in the doctor's
office just as the Indians attack. The two put up a fight,
but the farmer is killed and so is Blueberry's horse. The
old man's barn is full of cattle and one saddled horse, so
Blueberry stampedes the cattle and escapes on the horse in
the confusion. On the return trip he finds Manual, Pablo
and Joaquin each tied to a cactus and killed with arrows.
Blueberry gives them a decent burial. When he arrives back
at Fort Navajo it is deserted except for Lt. Crowe, whom
Blueberry now considers a traitor. Think what you will,
Crowe says, but we have a chance to save some of the
situation. With the help of some Apache trackers, Crowe has
figured out who killed the farmers and kidnapped young Jim
Stanton, which was the incident that started the war. The
boy was taken by Mescaleros, and is in Mexico. Blueberry
want to do the rescue, but Crowe needs him for credibility.
Also, it's too late to save Dickson's life and Bascom is
already dead. The lieutenant and the ex-lieutenant head for
Mexico, rescue the boy, and Crowe leads a diversion while
Blueberry makes it to Texas with Jim. Bluebery and Crowe
part friends, but without much hope of seeing one another
   again.

Summary: The story opens on a rainy evening in a town
called Acworth, on Lake Allatoona in Georgia. Sergeant
Grayson, the Van Horn brothers (Buddy and Roddy) and Steve
Pelton are about to leave a general store when two
Confederate soldiers get the drop on them, to arrest them
as saboteurs. A man named Henri Bowman, who has been
upstairs in the store, turns the tables and kills the two
soldiers. A third Confederate soldier, a Sergeant Fairfax,
watches this from outside through a window. Fairfax makes
an escape, though not without being knocked down and left
for unconscious by Roddy. Bowman leaves with Grayson's
group, and later explains why he took their part: He has
been in the Rebel prison in Rome, Georgia, and the
experience left him wanting to shoot a "Johnny Reb"
whenever he gets the chance. Grayson says that's where he's
going, to rescue three prisoners. The three are Lieutenant
Mike Blueberry, a Pinkerton agent named Ken Davies, and a
railroad engineer named Sam. They are awaiting the arrival
of General Landville Landbetter, who will preside at their
court-martial for destroying a munitions depot at Kingston.
At the moment Blueberry is playing poker with the
commanding officer of the prison (a Major), a Sergeant
Cambridge, and a black prisoner named Homer. The prisoners
stage a fist fight at the poker table so that Blueberry can
steal a revolver. The scene changes to Kingston, where
General David MacLaughlin asks about the pursuit of
Grayson's band. When MacLaughlin hears that two soldiers
were found dead, he asks about Bowman, because Bowman is
apparently on a highly-paid mission for the General. A few
days later, Garyson and his men find themselves
accidentally cornered by a large encampment of Confederate
soldiers. Grayson decides to try riding slowly through the
camp after nightfall expecting no-one will recognize them,
but Fairfax sees them and gives the alarm. Two men are
lost, but the rest make it through heading for Rome. At
Rome, meanwhile, Blueberry takes the Major hostage with his
stolen revolver and makes his escape with Sam and Davies in
a wagon. Other prisoners join them, including Homer.
Grayson arrives in time to help get the gates open. As the
party passes through the town of Rome, Davies and at least
one other man are lost to the guns of a patrol of soldiers.
When the fugitives pause, Blueberry gives Grayson a hug in
thanks, and lets the hostage go on foot. One of the freed
prisoners recognizes Bowman as a cruel slave hunter who
wronged his family, and tells Homer about it. After
recognizing Bowman, the freed slave tries to kill him but
is himself killed by Bowman. Bowman's story comes out, so
Bowman takes the train man, Sam, hostage. Sergeant Fairfax
shows up and saves Sam by knocking Bowman out. Fairfax
explains that Bowman was supposed to have used blanks in
his gun back at Acworth, and Fairfax is after him for the
murder of his two comrades that rainy night. Also, he
relates, Bowman has been hired by General MacLaughlin to
kill Blueberry. MacLaughlin wants revenge for the death of
his son, a Major O'Brien who died in a train wrecked by
Blueberry in an earlier album, Le Raid Infernal.
Fairfax leaves with Bowman in custody. Blueberry's plan now
is to steal General Landbetter's train at Kingston and
escape to the North, and the plan is soon in effect. When
MacLaughlin learns that Blueberry is still alive he kills
himself. Landbetter takes a short train full of soldiers
and pursues the stolen train. Grayson has gone ahead and
planted explosives on the bridge over the Oostamaula River,
but the fuse is too long and both trains make it over
before the bridge blows up. The pursuing train stops to get
water for its boiler, and the fugitive train stops to place
explosives in a tunnel in the Black Hills. The landscape
has changed to a kind of mountainous desert. Bowman catches
up to them, having killed Fairfax. Bowman kills Sam and
wounds Homer, but fails to harm Blueberry. Bowman gets
away, the tunnel blows up, and the escape is a success.
Blueberry is commended and offered a congressional medal.
Blueberry and Grayson head for Atlanta in pursuit of Bowman
and a new job with a General Sherman.

Summary: Chick Bill, a cowboy, sees a young Blackfoot
Indian boy named Petit Caniche being dragged by a bull,
rescues him, and then catches the bull. Petit Caniche's
tribe comes upon Chick Bill tying the bull up, and they
think he's a rustler. The tribe's cattle are being stolen
and the tribe is eager to find the culprit. Petit Caniche
returns just in time to explain, and Chick Bill becomes a
friend of the tribe. The next morning palefaces come and
try to buy the tribal lands for $1,000, and the tribe
refuses. Chick Bill steps in on the side of the Indians
when it looks like a gunfight will happen, and earns the
emnity of the paleface leader Señor Panthario. Another of
the white men with Panthario is a businessman named Camay
Léon. Chick Bill starts living with the Indians. Soon, when
it's his turn to watch the remaining cattle, Bill sees
footprints approaching without a person to make them. The
invisible person knocks Bill out with a stone and steals
the cattle. The tribe doesn't believe the story. They take
Bill to Wood City for white man's justice this time, and
Bill gets locked up in the town jail by Sheriff Dog Bull.
The sheriff leaves his deputy, Kid Ordinn, in charge for
the night, and the next morning Chick Bill is gone. Dog
Bull puts out wanted posters, and Panthario puts out a
reward for the capture of Chick Bill. That night Petit
Caniche, who helped Bill escape the jail, is bringing Bill
his gun and some provisions when the invisible man abducts
him. Two adult Indians and Chick Bill witness the
abduction, and the Indians now believe Bill's earlier story
about the invisible man. Bill tracks the abductor to a cave
and gets wounded by a gunshot trying to investigate. Chick
Bill's horse, Confetti, brings the Indians and the sheriff.
The cave yields a gun on a gunbelt, which is the first clue
to the identity of the invisible bandit. Puma Noir, one of
the Indians, finds another exit from the cave. A ransom
note demands $10,000 for the return of Petit Caniche. Chick
Bill, thinking the kidnapper must be Señor Panthario, says
he will take charge of getting Petit Caniche back. Bill
brings Panthario in for interrogation, but just as
Panthario is about to reveal the identity of the invisible
man, the invisible man himself knocks Panthario out. The
invisible man escapes, but Bill traces him to a store in
Wood City and they find Petit Caniche held in the basement.
Some quick work with a paint brush reveals that the
invisible man is Panthario's businessman friend Camay Léon,
now called Léon Camay. Panthario and Camay are put in jail.
Chick Bill takes his leave. Sheriff Dog Bull gets around to
asking how it was that Chick Bill escaped from the jail
earlier. It was a tunnel. The sheriff rushes back to the
jail, but Panthario has found the tunnel and is gone.
Panthario has left a threat to Bill's life written on the
wall of the cell. Dog Bull and Petit Caniche catch up with
Chick Bill to warn him. Panthario practices marksmanship
and sends threatening notes for three days. The town is on
edge. When the showdown comies, neither man is injured and
Panthario is defeated but gets away. A dog named Victoria
is brought in to track him down. By this time Panthario has
broken Camay out of jail and demands the secret of
invisibility. Camay takes a pill to demonstrate, and
disappears. The pills he leaves behind for Panthario are
horse laxatives. The label on the pill box leads Panthario
to a Dr. Alphonse Camay in Sugar Lake City. The dog and the
search party arrive in time to learn Panthario's
destination, and the scene changes to Sugar Lake City.
Alphonsed Camay is an eccentric inventor, a cousin of Léon
Camay, who knows that Léon is not a good person. Warned by
the good guys, who get there first, he tricks Panthario
into taking an inflation pill rather than the invisibilty
pill. Chick Bill leads him around on a string like a
balloon until Panthario breaks loose and floats off high in
the air toward Mexico. Note: Chick Bill and all other
characters have the bodies of humans and the heads of
   animals in this story.

Summary: Chick Bill is riding Confetti in the Arizona
Desert toward Wood City. He stops to build a campfire in a
sandstorm, and a current newspaper hits him in the face.
The Rabajoa Indians and the ranchers are fighting, Chick
Bill Learns, each accusing the other of stealing their
carrot crops. In other news, some significant government
gold reserves have been stolen and it is suspected that the
gold is being smuggled to Mexico. After a night's sleep,
Chick Bill is attacked by a lone Rabajoa Indian, then
almost dies of thirst, then is rescued by a coot in a
covered wagon who is heading to Wood City to buy carrots.
Carrots are worth their weight in gold in West Valley,
where the coot hopes to sell them. In Wood City, Sheriff
Dog Bull and Deputy Kid Ordinn are quarreling as usual, but
they are glad to see Chick Bill. The stagecoach arrives
with a Mr. Pamoison and a Mr. Camel aboard. The stage
driver refuses to go further because the Rabajoas are on
the warpath, but to Pamoison and Camel, getting to Phoenix
seems to be very important. Since they insist, the two
lawmen and Chick Bill decided to help them get a wagon and
accompany them. The travelers do not welcome Chick Bill's
company, and they hire a thug to put Bill in the hospital,
though without success. Petit Caniche, a Blackfood Indian
boy and friend from the previous story, shows up and wants
to go along on the trip to Phoenix, but Bill says it's too
dangerous. Pamoison and Camel try to kill Chick Bill three
times early in the trip, but twice Bill is saved by Petit
Caniche, who has stowed away in the wagon. Chick Bill
scouts ahead and is captured by the Rabajoas, and soon
thereafter the whole party is tied to stakes. In the night,
Petit Caniche frees Bill, Dog Bull and Kid Ordinn. He
leaves Pamoison and Camel tied up because he knows they've
been trying to kill Bill. Chick Bill goes back to get them
once Petit Caniche explains, because he wants to know why
they were trying to kill him. On the way back to their
wagon, Camel is wounded by an arrow. They flee with the
Indians in pursuit, until the wagon breaks an axle. The
Indians have them surrounded when Kid Ordinn remembers a
case of itching powder bombs given to him by Alphonse Camay
in the previous album. Delivering a few of these with a
slingshot soon lifts the seige. That night our friends
learn that Pamoison and Camel are transporting a chest full
of peculiar small gold ingots, and correctly assume that
this is gold stolen from the U.S. Treasury. The next day,
while the others repair the wagon, Chick Bill looks around
the area and gets himself captured by Señor Panthario.
Panthario, he discovers, has a whole wagon train full of
carrots and is thus responsible for the carrot famine. Bill
escapes and rides back to his own companions with a sample
bunch of carrots, and when Dog Bull tries to eat one he
finds a small bar of gold. They then realize that Pamoison
and Camel are taking gold to Panthario, who smuggles it
into Mexico in carrots. The Rabajoas attack and in the
confusion Pamoison and Camel escape with the wagon to join
Panthario. This time Chick Bill is able to explain the
situation to the Indians, and they join forces to attack
Panthario's wagon train. Panthario now has the itch bombs,
but is tricked into wasting them. The carrots are separated
from the gold, peace is declared, and all is well in
Arizona. Note: Chick Bill and all other characters have the
bodies of humans and the heads of animals in this story.

Summary: Chick Bill is riding the stagecoach toward
Wood City when he plays a practical joke on another
passenger, a Mr. Pilface. Pilface is thrown out of the
stage at full speed, and lands sitting in a cactus. He
swears revenge. Chick Bill leaves the coach on foot, though
his horse Confetti is supposed to have been tied behind. He
comes to an empty, broken-down farmhouse. Within a few
minutes Chick Bill has accidentally demolished the house. A
Native American painter has set up an easel and painted a
for-sale sign next to the house, and Confetti is with him,
posing for the painting. The artist's name is Vautour. He
convinces Bill to buy the house, partly playing on Bill's
guilt for having destroyed it, and partly by holding Bill
at gunpoint. Three hundred dollars changes hands, Vautour
leaves, and Confetti kicks over the easel when he realizes
there is no portrait of himself. Vautour comes back in a
bit to ask permission to set up his teepee nearby, which he
does. Meanwhile, in Wood City, Sheriff Dog Bull has grown a
mustache and is quarreling with his deputy, Kid Ordinn.
Chick Bill rides in and the two decide, along with Bill's
Indian friend Petit Caniche, to help Bill rebuild the house
on his new ranch. With Vautour watching, they make good
progress for several days. They keep hearing a loud
rumbling in the distance. Finally, when the construction is
complete, Mr. Pilface comes by to tell them that the Rapid
Pacific Railroad is planning to build right through the
house. Pilface has been watching for days with Vautour, and
delayed telling Bill as revenge for the incident on the
stagecoach. Vautour also knew about the railroad, which has
been blasting rock not far away, before he sold the ranch
to Chick Bill. Bill rides toward the explosions to take a
look, and one of the company's lookouts takes a shot at
him. it seems that the Rapid Pacific does not have
authorization from the government at Wachwingum and so is
at this point an illegal enterprise. Bill arrives just as a
large dynamite blast is about to go off, puts out the fuse
to save himself, and rides home. The authorization arrives,
and Pilface goes to Dog Bull and asks him to evict Chick
Bill from his ranch. Dog Bull Refuses, so Mr. Galett, head
of the railroad, then hires Señor Panthario to get rid of
Chick Bill. Panthario has a large but simple helper named
Costo, who's sent to do the job. Costo hates guns and
attacks anyone who points one, but when he sees Kid
Ordinn's water pistol he thinks it's great and wants to
shoot himself. Unfortunately he picks Chick Bill's revolver
to do that with, and gets a bullet stuck in one of his
teeth. Pain and dentistry follow. Panthario hears the
screams coming from Chick Bill's house and he thinks Costo
has done the job. Federal police also hear the cries and
investigate. Bill, Dog Bull, and Kid Ordinn get arrested,
and Pilface and Panthario arrive in time to gloat. At the
trial, the three friends are accused of building an illegal
ranchhouse and trying to assassinate Costo. Vautour denies
having sold the ranch to Chick Bill, and Costo is too
simple, bandaged, and pained by his tooth to testify that
they weren't trying to kill him. The friends are sentenced
to 19 1/2 years in the tropical penitentiary Swing-Swing.
The train gets near the prison after two days and the three
prisoners escape within sight of the building, which seems
to be in a desert since Dog Bull manages to land on a
cactus when he jumps from the train. Soon, though, they are
in a swamp surrounded by hungry alligators as they head
north. This hazard surmounted, Kid Ordinn almost kills his
boss for food, but just in time Dog Bull is caught in a
trap and menaced by a Jaguar. Chick Bill saves him, and
they find a house where they are given a good meal and a
bed to sleep in. It turns out, however, that the homeowner
is Krah Mike, the director of the Swing-Swing penetentiary.
Krah Mike has a slave named Krado. Chick Bill tries to
awaken Dog Bull and Kid Ordinn to escape when the police
come to tell Krah Mike about their escape, but Bill's two
friends are too sleepy and get taken to prison. Kid Ordinn
likes it because the food is regular and he doesn't have to
take orders from Dog Bull. Weeks pass, and Krado brings a
message to the head guard: Krah Mike has broken a leg and
can't come to Swing-Swing, but a government inspector is
coming. The guards do their best to satisfy the inspector,
but he is difficult. He takes Kid Ordinn and Dog Bull
aside, and reveals that he is really Chick Bill in
disguise. Using a powerful compound made by Alphonse Camay,
they dissolve the bars of a cell and escape across the
desert near the prison. They fall into a tunnel that seems
to be well-used, but manage to get out, get horses and head
north planning to hide out with Petit Caniche and the
Blackfoot Indians. Days later, they come across Vautour the
artist, and force him to put his part in the sale of the
ranch in writing. Meanwhile a celebration is being planned
to inaugurate the Rapid Pacific rail line, and a bank
president named Abraham Longcol will preside. Longcol will
also be opening a branch bank at Wood City, so he will
arrive with a chest of gold. Panthario and Pilface plot to
steal the gold and blame it on Chick Bill. Petit Caniche
overhears them. The celebration and ribbon-cutting take
place at Wachwingum, which has a skyline that includes a
dome like a Capitol building. Afterwards Longcol (who looks
like Abraham Lincoln), with Mr. Galett and other
dignitaries, gets on a Rapid Pacific train for the trip to
Wood City with the gold. Within a few hours the rain is in
the Arizona desert. Three outlaws board the train dressed
as Chick Bill, Dog Bull and Kid Ordinn, but it is soon
revealed that three of the dignitaries on the train are in
fact the real Chick Bill, Dog Bull and Kid Ordinn. The
robbery is stopped. Chick Bill hands Vautour's written
confession to the capitalist Galett and the
misunderstanding is cleared up. Panthario escapes. Note:

Summary: Four men are making coffee around a fire built
in the snow. One of them, named Ed, is shot by a shooter in
hiding. The scene shifts to Deadwood, August 2, 1876. A
boy, Melvin, and a girl, Celine, talk about getting married
when they grow up. Melvin wants a chicken ranch, and Celine
wants there to be one rooster for each hen. Men come and
kill Celine and her family, but Melvin is spared because he
was hiding from Celine's dad. Melvin rides into town to
tell the sheriff, but is told his news is not interesting
because Wild Bill Hickok has just been killed. Melvin
drinks whiskey and tries to get to the sheriff anyway. He
narrowly avoids a bad beating in the saloon due to the
intervention of Louise Woodruff and her husband, Charlie.
Louise tells Melvin's uncles that she's a schoolteacher and
asks permission to take Melvin away with her, as a kind of
substitute for her younger brother who was killed by
bullies. On the road with the Woodruffs, we see that
Charlie is a gambler and Louise is a prostitute, though she
hides it from Melvin. Louise does try to teach Melvin
spelling, but soon he gets into trouble by killing a thug
who has stolen his memento of Celine. On the run, Melvin
steps in a bear trap and can't get out. The trapper, named
Sweet Jude, takes Melvin under his wing. After seven years
in the woods of Wyoming, Melvin finally goes into a town to
find out why Sweet Jude is taking so long bringing back the
money from the year's trapping. Jude has skipped with the
money. Melvin gets a job at a sawmill. One night he gets
caught watching through the window as the boss's daughter
plays the piano. The daughter, Heather Garrison, has her
father call off the dogs and guards and asks Melvin to
marry her. When Melvin hesitates, she gets angry and he has
to leave town. He kills one of Garrison's thugs as he is
leaving. Next Melvin gets a job as a bartender in a saloon
in Gayville. He sees the sheriff there kill a bank robber,
and he also gets and hides the $10,000 from the bank that
no one else can find. Next he spots the men that killed
Celine and her family. He takes the money to Cheyenne and
opens a bank account. The story then returns to the opening
scene, in which Melvin has just killed one of Celine's
killers. He kills two more, and is himself wounded, when he
confronts the last one and kills him. Back in Deadwood,
Melvin's uncles supervise the building of the chicken coop
while Melvin recovers from his wound. They can't
understand, though, why he has ordered as many roosters as
   hens.

Summary: Delphius de Riquetti, the Marquis de
Mirabelle, with his two young friends Julius and Renardeau,
crash-lands a small airplane in the Northern Homeric
Islands. They land high in a tree, and nobody is hurt. They
lower their chest full of severed heads in glass bottles
safely to the ground. Mirabelle calculates that they have
made their landfall between the town of Sainte-Rivière and
Fort Ciprius-de-St.-Saveur, in the Franslavian colony
established by King Ciprius IV. Julius's parents are at
forced labor in the colony, and he begs Mirabelle's help in
rescuing them. As Mirabelle drags the chest of heads toward
the town, he explains that the Franslavian colony is
surrounded by a Britton colony. A band of Homerindians
spots the three newcomers but leaves them alone because
from hearing their language they can tell they are friends.
The three travelers arrive at Saint-Rivière. They are first
greeted by begging urchins, then by colonial administrators
in costumes that suggest those of the American Puritans.
Preparations for a witch-burning are being made in the
street. That night in the hotel Mirabelle discovers that
one of the bottled heads is that of a Homerindian, and that
there is an Indian talisman in the bottle with the head.
Mirabelle most of their money on supplies, including
muskets. The scene changes to Fort Ciprius-de-St.-Saveur to
the south. The Fort's harbor holds four three-masted
sailing ships. The commander of the fort, Colonel de la
Monginière, is too ill with a fever to complete the formal
greeting of a party of reenforcements. The first enquiry of
the new arrivals is about a prototype flying machine they
are supposed to have received. A Mr. De Gnaedig, speaking
for the Colonel, knows nothing about a flying machine.
Asking around in the town, Mirabelle is unable to learn
anything about the talisman. They are interrupted when the
populace is assembled to witness a witch burning. Julius
spots his parents in the crowd. The Brittons attack then,
and in the confusion Mirabelle and the boys rescue both the
condemned woman and the parents. The Fort soon hears about
the attack on the town, and troops are dispatched. Among
the besieging Redcoat troops is a double agent who seems to
be looking for Mirabelle and his chest of heads. The small
party of escapees makes it to the forest where they are
joined by an Indian. The crime of the woman that was saved
from burning was that she loved an Indian, and this is her
lover, "Neige sur le Lac." He has a large canoe and the
seven of them head downriver. During the trip Mirabelle
pulls out a newspaper from the old world and shows it to
Renardeau. Renardeau's village has been destroyed as a
"pocket of resistance" by the Duke of Aultroy. Renardeau
bursts into tears and reveals that he had acted as a spy
for the Duke, who had promised to spare the village. It was
Renardeau's report that made its way to the besieging
troops. That night a party of whites and Indians tries to
kill the voyagers, but they save themselves and kill the
attackers. Neige sur le Lac takes them, after several days'
travel on the river, to a tribe called the Hokkenates. The
travelers are not welcomed at first, but a glimpse of the
embalmed head of the Indian in Mirabelle's bottle changes
that. The head is that of a holy man who had left the tribe
in the company of a Franslavian explorer, Boniface de
Lajatte. De Lajatte's head is also among the nine. The two
men had been studying unusual old parchments that seemed to
tell a story about strange flying creatures like those
Mirabelle has already fought. Mirabelle lets himself be
staked out atop a cliff for a ritual that should bring him
an explanatory vision. His father, one of the heads, speaks
to him. He awakes back indoors to the realization that the
Homerindians were originally an Asian ("Indrolasian")
people. One of the heads, with a tattoo on its forehead,
shows up on a Homeriandian parchment. Neige sur le Lac and
Julius's parents decide to stay with the tribe and are
welcome, but Mirabelle leaves. He has the image of the
Asian face, with an elephant, a palm tree and a pyramid
shown with it on the parchment, to investigate. The boys
   decide to go with him.
