The King Drinks

The King Drinks / Willy Vandersteen ; translated by Nicholas J. Lahey and edited by William P. Dalton. -- San Francisco, Calif. : Hiddigeigei Books, 1977. -- 55 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Willy and Wanda ; 4) -- Originally published in Flemish. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6790.N44W5K5 1977

Note: Parts of the story are told in rhyming dialogue. According to the back cover of the first number in this translation series (An Island Called Hoboken), it appears that this translation was originally going to be called The King Drinks Root Beer. Root beer would not, of course, have produced the level of amiable drunkenness necessary for the plot.

Summary: Aunt Sidonia buys a magic mirror, which shows an ancestor of hers being threatened. Wanda and Willy immediately jump through the mirror, shattering it, and arrive 700 years in the past. The elder Sidonia is a pharmacist and is concerned with the health of her king, King Bud the Wiser. Wanda soon diagnoses his problem: a dry liver. Wanda teaches Sidonia how to make beer, and the king recovers immediately. The whole country starts drinking beer, becomes very kind and happy, and the people become known as the Elbow Benders. Beer is free, and no person over the age of 18 is allowed to drink water. Sidonia, Wanda and Willy set out with a keg to improve the humor of a neighboring king and country, King Cactus of the Dry Livers. They struggle with a two-headed dragon, a hostile and ambulatory tree, and giant bats on the way. King Cactus likes the beer, but he's a miser and doesn't want to have to buy it. He tortures Wanda's doll, Sawdust, to get the beer recipe, but is unsuccessful. The friends escape, and on the way home they find some dragon eggs. Soon Sidonia is acting strangely, stealing pillows and kidnapping people. It turns out the pillows are for her project to hatch the dragon eggs, and the kidnapping is done by King Cactus disguised as Sidonia. Cactus has infiltrated to try and get the beer formula. They capture Cactus, but he escapes and soon returns with an army and siege machines. The siege goes on for a long time, until the baby dragons are big enough to frighten the Dry Liver mercenaries away. The dragons have been raised on beer, so they're too friendly to scare anyone normally, but Sidonia gives them water for the first time and it makes them angry enough for the task. At the end the two kings joust for supremacy, break through the brewery wall together, and get so drunk they become friends and start a bi-national beer export company. The Dry Livers, it turns out, are good at making oak barrels. About this time the 20th century Sidonia has finished putting her mirror back together, and Willy and Wanda are drawn back home.
