Joe's Bar

Joe's Bar / Muñoz and Sampayo ; translated by Jeff Lisle ; edited by Bernd Metz. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 96 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- "Graphic novel/contemporary urban life." -- Translations from the series Alack Sinner. -- CONTENTS: "Muñoz & Sampayo : a Profile" / Oscar Zarate. p. 5-7 ; "Pepe, the Architect" p. 9-36 ; "Rusty Stories" p. 37-56 ; "Ella" p. 57-76 ; "Fifth Story" p. 77-96. -- Call no.: PN6790.A73M8 1987
"Pepe, the Architect" p. 9-36 -- Summary: Pepe is an undocumented immigrant who cleans up after hours in Joe's Bar. In his own country he was an architect. Now he lives in fear, and has paranoid fantasies about police and immigration agents. A woman follows him home from work and starts going through his things, and when she looks through his passport he knocks her down and runs. Joe lets Pepe sleep in the bar, along with Jonathan Jones, an elderly black man also down and out. They argue about exploitation and oppression. In the morning Pepe leaves, in anger, and is later found dead in an alley.

"Rusty Stories" p. 37-56 -- Summary: Tigran Pacha, wrestling champion, meets former Jewish boxing champion Moses Man and proposes a match to raise some money. Once known as the "Jew Killer" and the "Jewish Matador," Moses has fallen to drink. His time as a champion was very brief, and he hasn't fought for years, though Pacha thinks his name will still draw a crowd. It's supposed to be a mock fight, but Moses lands a solid punch and Tigran Pacha puts him in the hospital in return. In the hospital Moses Man punches himself to death.

"Ella" p. 57-76 -- Summary: Ella is a white woman who is a photographer, and a hypochondriac. She has an affair with a black doctor, who beforehand expresses his reservations by talking about Leroy Jones and "The Dutchman." He leaves her for another black man. Throughout the story Ella encounters and photographs people involved with their own stories in Joe's Bar, including Pepe the Architect and Moses Man.

"Fifth Story" p. 77-96 -- Summary: Mike Weiss, age 16, falls in love with Rosa Feldman, and she leads him into a sexual relationship. Mike's father is dying of cancer. Mike becomes distraught and gains a lot of weight. Rosa can't advise him, so he avoids her. Mike puts his father out of his pain by throwing him out of the hospital window.

"La Question du Réalisme dans Le Bar à Joe" / Jean-Philippe
Martin. p. 38-45 in 9e Art : les Cahiers du Musée de la
Bande Dessinée, no. 3 (Jan. 1998).
-- English summary
(from p. 138): "Realism in Le Bar à Joe. Le Bar à Joe
(Joe's Bar), a rendezvous where thousands of destinies
interweave, gave Muñoz and Sampayo the idea for a series of
stories that departs from the conventions of narrative in
vogue in comics in an attempt to convey the depth of real
life. Jean-Philippe Martin examines the narrative disorder
which appears to be rampant in these stories, the great
abundance of visual information, the status of the spoken
word, and the way in which elements of reality find their
way into this fiction." -- Includes bibliographical
