Summary: Nine officials gather for a three-day hunting party, called together by former Politburo member V. A. Chevchenko. The participants are from Hungary, Russia, Georgia, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, East Germany, Poland, and the Ukraine. They hire a young French interpreter because one of their number, Sergei Shavanidze, is not fluent in French, the language the rest of them all have in common. Shavanidze has taken Chevchenko's place in the Politburo. Each of the men tells a story of his personal political life, and debt to Chevchenko, who in his day was involved in almost every event in Soviet and Warsaw Pact history. The action is seen through the eyes of the interpreter, who discovers at the end that the gathering has been staged for the assassination of Shavanidze, whom the rest consider to be too much of a hardliner to lead the revolution.
