The Great Walls of Samaris

The Great Walls of Samaris / Schuiten, and Peeters. -- New York : Nantier-Beall-Minoustchine, 1987. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 31 cm. -- (Stories of the Fantastic ; 2) -- Translation of: Les Cités Obscures 1: Les Murailles de Samaris. -- Earlier serialized in English in Heavy Metal as The Walls of Samaris. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.S35 G7 1987

Summary: A man called Franz, a resident of Xhystos, accepts the mission of exploring and reporting on a distant city called Samaris. He is to be well paid for this, and even to be given a seat on the Council upon his return. However, others including some of Franz's friends have traveled to Samaris and have not returned. His friends think Franz is crazy. He leaves anyway. It is a long and arduous journey of many weeks on various trains and aircraft, ending with a day and half in a small boat. Franz finds lodging in a hotel in Samaris, and sets out to explore. Samaris is a quiet city, with a miscellaneous architecture, and behind it all is a strange hissing sound which Franz soon learns to ignore. The people are not very communicative, and after three weeks Franz still doesn't feel he understands the place. Franz is granted an interview with the Governor, who says the earlier visitors that Samaris sent must never have arrived. The Governor sits before a wall on which is a large emblem of a carnivorous plant, called a Drosera. Day follows day. Franz discovers that the windows of his room are walled up, and feels like he is himself lapsing into a stupor. Finally Franz determines to leave, and asks a woman he has seen every day in the lobby of the hotel to go with him. She refuses, and he touches her. She seems to tear, and the other people in the lobby react threateningly. Franz returns to his room, and the hissing seems louder. Frustrated, he goes to the door of a nearby room where the sound seems to originate, and breaks open the door. Not only does the door break, but a portion of the wall also comes away. Franz sees that the hotel, except for his room, is a two-dimensional façade. Not just the hotel, but every building in Samaris is a facade, constantly moved by hidden machinery to give him variety in his walks of exploration. Even the people he has met are made of cardboard. Samaris has somehow been built on the model of the carnivorous Drosera plant, and is slowly absorbing Franz to make him another two-dimensional image in its population. Alarmed, Franz makes a daring escape and struggles back to Xhystos on foot to report. He is not recognized in his home city. Begging to speak with the Council, he is finally admitted. They do not remember or believe him, and Franz realizes that the councilmen of Xhystos are also cardboard cutouts.
